My 15 yr old wants to learn to drive a stick. I have two options, my 997 or my vintage 914. The shifting on the 914 isn't anything like on the cars that are produced today, so I actually look forward to teaching him on the 997. I figure Porsche built sufficient durability into the gearbox to handle this task.

I taught my wife to drive a stick many years ago on a Triumph TR6. I later tried to teach 16 year old daughter on a Honda S2000 and failed miserably. I eventually succeeded by using my new (at the time) Corvette C6. The greater torque in the Vette allowed her to master the clutch quickly. That car would move off at idle.
Teach them to drive a stick, it is a disappearing skill.

My GF wanted to learn stick. Had her rev the engine in 997.1 TT Cab. She laughed. Gave me the keys back.

Probably don't need to master heel-n-toe but seems like a good skill to have. You may need to rent a U-Haul.

My wife doesn't even want to get in mine, let alone drive it. She calls it a "stupid car". Too low, uncomfortable, harsh, and noisy. he, he. I'm a lucky man!

I'd suggest that her first clutch engagement be while the engine is "cold".
It idles higher for those first few minutes and she will just be able to let out the clutch without worrying about getting the throttle just right.
That will give her the confidence that she will likely need. My wife was pretty terrified the first time she drove mine... and don't forget to have her wear the right kind of shoes... my wife tried to drive with heels... no bueno...

My wife had a manual trans refresher course im my car a few months back. The last time she drove MT was childhood. She did fine. It's actually a relatively forgiving car to learn on. The engine is powerful enought that you don't have to give it much throttle to avoid stalling.

Actually, I might recommend having a learner drive the car when at least the gearbox is warm for ease of finding 1 and 2.

My wife could care less about cars as long as they start, have a stereo, and have AC. I keep telling her I want her to learn to drive it, followed by "Just in case there's a fire, I want you to be able to back it out of the garage.."

Ensure she remembers "R" to back it out and not 1 to start!

Some people take well to manual transmissions quickly. Some not so well. I personally would start someone like that on something simple, with less expense involved if they wound up riding the clutch.
