997.2 Emblem removal injury, 991 Emblem?
I'll share my stupidity for the cause---
This weekend in waxing my car I caught the C and snapped in half.
1st lesson to learn: the C can easily be broken.
I researched this forum on how to remove the emblem and read to use a blow drier to heat up the rubber/glue that holds the emblem on, and then use floss to remove. Then use the blow drier again and your fingers to rub off the rest of the rubber/glue. Then clay-bar and wax to finish.. It all worked outstandingly well.
2nd Lesson: The combination of blow drier on metal and friction from rubbing can do quite a number on your fingers. I was so excited to get it all done that I did not even notice the pain until it was finished... typing, writing, touching anything in fact is quite unpleasant.
Thoughts on the naked rear end: To me it looks just that naked....aesthetically I think the cursive words help to make the back end visually seem wider. The back end now looks more narrow.
In light of this, the new PORSCHE with 911 Carrera S cursive words on the back of the 991 make sense... I'd imagine that they play a visual trick of making the back end seem wider...while I don't like the paragraph of words, I do love the appearance of width. Take a look at this photo, squint your eyes to blur the writing and watch the back end narrow, focus in on the words and you'll likely notice the width..

I think the chrome letters might also accent my clear taillights that have a strip of chrome across the top of them. (rather than the brushed silver Carrera).
So I'm seriously considering ordering the 991 Emblems. Worst case if it looks terrible, I can just remove it... still have my left hands fingers....
What do you guys think???? Looking for feedback...even better would be a photo of a 996 or 997 with the new emblem.
EDIT: 3/20/12 after weeks of driving around "naked" I decided it just looked too plain, and installed the "P O R S C H E" emblem. Took about 15 minutes.
I edited this post to add the photo so that they could be side by side.
I short, I LOVE IT.... The new emblem really has the visual impact I'd hoped for of widening the rear. I really also like that it is unique.
I used a strip of blue tape across the whole back end from one tail light to the other. The bottom of the blue tape was positioned at the top of the little clear triangle in the center of the light. I placed the S first, and then used the H turned around to space out the other letters. The last letter "E" I had to measure out. It spaced out perfectly in the center from side to side and top to bottom. I could not be happier with it...

too little too late, I know, but I learned a long time ago that given modern technology, there's always something available that makes the job easier and requires little to no elbow grease (finger tip grease). In this case, I think goo gone has been recommended to easily remove the sticky stuff without harming the finish.
With respect to your observations about perceived width, I think it's a personal thing, and a matter of opinion. Personally I don't see the width issue as it relates to the number of characters stuck to the butt, but I understand the principle. I don't like the "S" part. Mine is a 4S, and I don't like the "S" part of it. "911" looks great on the butt end, I think. To each his own. Regardless of the responses here, you gotta have what makes you happy.

I don't know about the optical illusion on rear-end width, but I also think sans badge is too naked for my taste. I've always liked the rear script since the SC and 3.2 Carrera days. I think the chrome effect of the 991 lettering will look great on the 997.2.

I have removed and replaced my s with painted red s on 2 cars Floss no heat but most important thing was to use painters tape to mark the margins to make sure the replacement is in the right spot

Ouch!
It might look ok. You'd have to measure to be sure but the "Carrera S" part of the 991 logo seems smaller than on the 997 so the overall length of the "911 Carrera S" doesn't appear to be that much wider than your original emblem. I'm not sure if that's a plus or minus for you.
When I see an emblem that I know doesn't belong on a car I sometimes wonder what the owner's motivation was; maybe trying to pass off the car as something it's not? I know that's not what you're doing, and what difference does it make what I think anyway, but just thought I'd throw that out there. As Domer911 said, make yourself happy.

I measured the width of my car both before and after debadging, and I can attest that it remained the same.
With a badge you miss all the "What kind if car is that" stuff at red lights. (swear)

I always de-badge, well almost...this time "the boss" said to leave it alone, "she" likes it that way.
I have a bin full of letters, numbers and models BOXSTER, CARRERA, 911, X5, 3.0 CLK320. But "she" has taken over "our" 06 C2 S...
I must admit she looks better in that car than me anyway...........

I agree with Domer and Mike...do what makes you happy.
Putting 991 badging on your car would not be my first choice, though.
It'll always look "wrong" to Porsche guys, which probably is no big deal...until resale time.

I personally like the 991 lettering and think it would look good on your car. Others have done it and I like it.
I'm not a fan of debadged 911s for some reason.
