I had considered that, as it was registered at the start of August it was probably been built in June or July and therefore would have been one of the very last 06 cars. As I recall the new Porsche model starts after August?

I see, apologies for that then, here in the UK its still marketed as an 06 model.

If the car was built in 2005, we estimate the change to be around late Feb. or March '05. But to be sure you need to check the engine number.
The Porsche shop manual for the 997 shows the larger IMS bearing cover and nut were installed at engine number:
- 69507475 : 3.6L Carrera
- 68509791 : 3.8L Carrera S
However, I'm not sure if these engine numbers are just for the US market or worldwide.

From earlier in this thread:
685XXXXX = M97 for MY05
686XXXXX = M97 for MY06
687XXXXX = M97 for MY07

I know this is an older thread, I was just curious about my engine after seeing some other post regarding the IMS. I have only had my car for 8 months. Love it!
Anyways I have a 2005 C2S with a manufacture date of 05/05
M97/68511737

OK I am a new member looking to buy 2006 complied (manufacture July 2005) C4. I have searched every where to see if was built with the upgraded IMS however the numbers I have don't seem to line up with anything I can find. Apologies in advance for my ignorace but can anyone decipher the following:
M96/70509600871 (not sure if the 7 should be in there, seems like an extra digit to me) so maybe it's
M96/0509600871

I repeat: this entire thread is conjecture, so don't pin me to this engine's IMS spec. You never really know unless you drop the engine, pull off the transmission and look for yourself.

Mike, Thanks for your insight. Don't worry I won't hold you too it! I have not heard of any engine failures over here in Australia and the car is for sale via a dealer so I will go for the extended warranty just to be sure.

My 06 has a production date of
10/05
and engine # M96/0569604269
Aug of 06 and still M96? Isn't that strange?
Well, it must be because I have a NON S model...

Depending on which thread you read, you'll see:
1) That the M97 is the next version of engine after the M96 and that all cars (S and base) switch over to M97 after some specific date.
OR
2) That the M96 engine is the 325hp model in the base cars and the M97 is the 355hp model in the S cars.
I believe it's #2.
So yes. Your car is M96 because it's a base model.
Can someone on this board show me a base car with an M97 engine? That will prove my opinion wrong.
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it is No 1 after talking to flat 6 and LN engineering. One of them may be able to help you out. A very early build 2005 S, to my understanding, can have a M96 that will take the replaceable bearing without an engine teardown.
