As I am looking for a 2005 black/black tip coupe, I read somewhere the terms 997.1 and 997.2. What is the difference?
Thanks!

Short answer is the 997.1 refers to the '05-'08 model years. Starting in '09 Porsche made many changes including engine, PDK (auto trans.), interior (Nav. screen size increased, ipod/sat. radio capable, ect.), front and rear fascias and lighting, wheels ect. This is refered to the 997.2.
All the best,

Engine went to DFI in the 997.2 which were the 2009MY-2011MY
All engines got more HP, better fuel economy, we think a more reliable engine (but many cars had defective fuel pumps that got replaced under a service campaign)
Automatic tranny went to dual clutch system (PDK), and eventually flappy-paddle shifters became available for it.
PCM upgraded without the phone keypad, which meant more room for the screen (991 screen on MY2012+ is even bigger), and options for bluetooth and ipod/aux/usb audio interface became available.
For the 2005 car in question, there are specific things you need to check on related to known issues for some 997.1 engines (shafts and seals)

I have a 997.1 2008 C2S. Direct injection on the motor helped improve horse power from 355 to 385hp which was a nice improvement in the C2S. There were some issues with the IMS Intermediate shaft that was fixed in the 997.2 but the high pressure fuel pump is prone to failure in the 997.2.
I don't think you'd go wrong buying either model so long as the car was well maintained. If I'm not mistaken there was an upgrade in 2006 with the IMS that makes it less prone to failure. Maybe 2005's are good...you can research IMS 997.2 and RMS Rear Main Seal to read about some of the issues folks were having.
LED driving lights are nice and the NAV is nice in the 997.2.
Good luck on your search.

Don't allow yourself to be spooked by the IMS stuff you read online. All the most reliable evidence indicates that it is exceedingly unlikely to be a problem, especially if you take good care of your car.
A 997.2 (which is the face lifted mid-cycle refresh of the 997) is clearly improved upon in a number of areas, discussed above, but the 997.1 is hardly a slouch. If money isn't an obstacle, and you can find the options you want, go 997.2. But I saw a 997.1 on a (non-Porsche) dealer lot, test drove it, fell in love and bought it on the spot. I haven't regretted it for a minute.

I know this isn't one of the countless IMS threads, but as for that potential problem, I got some input this week from my service manager. I have a 997.1 that's out of warranty and have read enough to be concerned. He said in the 6+ years that they've been servicing 997.1s, literally hundreds of different cars, he knows of only 4 that had the issue. All of them had less than 30K miles on them. If the vehicle you're looking at has more miles than that and has been taken care of, oil changed regularly, etc. (like most are), you shouldn't worry about it.

Buy the latest model year you can afford - great rule of thumb
