Update - Correction - $1066 is for aftermarket Ti bolts. Genuine Ferrari Ti bolts are $4540 per set.

Any guesses as to why I traded my "bucket list" F430 and went back to Porsche?

Damn, $1,066 aftermarket or $4,540 Ferrari? Both are too rich for my blood, and wallet.

The must have a group buy or discount going on. A week or so back their web site listed the prices as $599 and $499, respectively.

My bolts on a 2007 living in quite a wet city have absolutely no rust on them. How in the world yours were rusted that bad?

Btw, how do you know if the Chinese made bolts hold enough torque to hold wheels in place in all conditions?

Not really. Titanium is significantly more expensive material than stainless steel!

Actually, since the fall of communism, (e.g., the end of the Soviet Union) titanium is more obtainable on the world market than ever before. (Previously, the Soviets were the major producers and users of the stuff).

What truly drives up the cost of titanium manufactured items is the machining costs. You must use a much harder tool to work it (like carbide).

Many years ago I met someone on a plane who spent a lot of time in the Soviet Union. He told me that he was building a desalination plant there and they absolutely could not get PVC pipe--like we use all the time for sprinklers! Instead, they offered him titanium tubing. (Of course, they had no fittings, so everything had to be titanium welded!) They had tons of that stuff.

I've worked with it and it's a bear. But the cost per pound is way down.

If we were all brutally honest with ourselves, we would come to the conclusion that buying a $100K+ car "is insane." I guess it all depends how you want to spend your discretionary income. Some buy $10K to $30K watches, in multilpes. I bought Ti bolts for $300.

I think I covered all of the info you requested. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
Great way to put it in perspective. And thanks, all questions answered.

I don't know why my bolts rusted so quickly. I have only had the car for 3.5 months. Maybe the previous owner used harsh chemicals to wan the wheels (I doubt that because the car was pristine when I picked it up). Only the front wheel bolts had that much rust. The rear bolts were not that bad.

this may just be the beginning. Hopefully you don't start discovering, one part at a time, that before selling you the car, the previous owner carefully removed all the OEM parts and replaced them with cheap replicas. Hopefully.

That was COLD..................... but funny!

Yeah, maybe he replaced them with cheap U.S. parts, and I'll have to replace those parts with good Chinese parts.

Must be something that was applied to make it rust like that... quite strange. How old's the car? what sort of milage?

Alex,

My car is a 2010, which was initially put into service (titled) late in model year 2010 on 9/5/10. I bought it on 9/3/11 with 2,945 miles on the clock. It now has 7,500 miles on it.
