Question How to repair a cup holder on a 997.1

One of the swinging arms on my retractable cup holder arms (Right side) shoots out like a switch blade (fast)! But the opposite cup holder retractable arm on the Left side comes of slowly and smoothly...

Any suggestions on how to "repair" the Right arm so it matches pace of it's Left "slower/smoother" brother? Is there some sort of thick grease or ???

Thanks,
David

For what it's worth, Porsche doesn't repair them. They swap them out as a complete assembly. (Sily, of course). I don't believe it's a lube issue. Take a flashlight to it and look for anything that can reveal why one is quicker to deploy than the other.

Hmmm. I noticed recently that the left cup holder doesn't swing out easily, and has to be coaxed by prying it a little. Perhaps I should see if it needs replacing while my CPO warranty is still available.

I would as I believe a replacement is around $200.00!

I'll try that out this weekend otherwise I can live with it. Thanks for the suggestion!

I would recommend removing the assembly from the dash entirely in order to take a look at the mechanism. It sounds like a spring might not be held in place correctly.
Do a search for cup holder removal and trim replacement and you'll find a good set of instructions. Basic removal is easy........if you open the glove box, you'll see two allen head bolts recessed in the underside of the assembly. These hold the entire cup holder assembly in the dash. Remove these and the assembly slides out. (It doesn't take much to unthread the bolts, but you may need to use a set of pliers to pull them down through the guide holes to free them enough to provide clearance to remove the cup holder assembly.) One of the posts tells you how to dismantle the guts of the assembly to see the springs etc. Shouldn't take more than a half hour to do. Good luck.

The dealership switched out my unit several years ago trying to sort out a rattle issue--the cupholder was not the issue. The replacement cup holder works poorly. The right side deploys quickly. The left side hangs up. Clearly, from the earlier comments, there is a design issue working here.

Experiencing this issue. Right side shoots out as soon as you fold down cover. It's like the spring lock is broken. Car is cpo, so going to bring it to dealer.

The first thing I broke on the 911 was the little cup-holder lip, and that in turn broke my heart

Have moved on...it's just a cup holder!

What is the expected deployment speed...quick like the 911 or slow and smooth?

Most complicated cup holder ever. It always gets a comment from first time riders. Porsche should put the effort into tech that they put into the cup holder

Make sure you close each individual cup holder on each arm before you push it in or each arm may jam on you when you try to get it out.
Try pushing each arm closed and it may free up, I did gently pry out one arm that got
Stuck.

By golly it worked. Pried both open and sure enough the cup holders were open. Made sure they were shut and now both are fine.

Cheers!
