Which 997 variant would be the next 993?

What's interesting to me about the 993 is that its collectability now is largely based upon its lack of desirability in its era. Porsche was still building the car with antiquated techniques, which led to a high price disproportionate to its new competitors (supra, rx-7). They sold very few 993s as a result, so now, its the perfect storm for their values to remain solid: low production numbers and the last of the air-cooled motors. I have one. It's like owning a piece of history, but it doesn't compare to the 997.

I hate to burst the OP's bubble but no way the 997 is the next 993.
993's are the last of the air cooled generation and as such highly sought after especially due to their body shape. Owners can actually tinker with them whereas the 997 is full of computer aided electronics etc. etc. Guys are even selling their 997's to move back to 993's!!! And I'm one of them who's thinking about it.
You can buy used 997 Carrera's and Carrera S's cheaper than 993 Carrera S or C4S all day long. That's 14 years later. I won't even go into trying to find a 993 Turbo for less than $60k yet again 14 years later!
The 997 is mass produced whereby the 993 wasn't so its a lot harder finding the good quality, well cared for 993's. Finding a good quality 997 takes a 20 min google search.

I can guaranty that if you can't drive better than the next guy you won't be faster in the new car either. Marketing pronouncements can lie, Physics does not. Tires are tires, HP is HP.

Excluding the special program cars like the GTS et al, I think the 997.2's will fare better because of the 9A1 engine. In turn, the S's will do better because of the 3.8. Next, the 4's will do better because of the wider hips. Ergo, a 997.2 C4S should do ok, relatively speaking.
Having said that, if and when my beloved 1998 C2S goes to that big parts bin in the sky (and I live to tell the tale), I'd probably go for a 997.2 C2S if I opt for a newer model - the C4S felt heavy to me when I drove the lineup this summer at the Atlanta Porsche Roadshow.
