I did a search but couldn't find an answer to this question:
Does the 996/997 removable hardtop have any sort of inserts or rails to attach a roof rack and if so, is there a specific rack required?
Any difference between the 996 and the 997 hardtops in this regard (I know that the 996 top can be attached to a 997 by retrofitting some attachment hardware)?
I'm interested in putting a couple pairs of skis or a road bike on top.
Any experience or comments on this situation would be appreciated.
Thanks

No....there are no provisions.
No real external differences between the 996 and 997 tops. Later 996 hardtops have a screw type mount. Earliest had bayonet.
Several years ago Porsche DID produce a mounting system for the hardtops but that was back in the early 996 years. It was abandoned a long time ago.
These days my skis are so short I can carry them inside!
