Default Exhaust Header Damage

Brought my car in for service, they noted that the pipes on both sides are compressed about 1/4 of an inch. Not sure how but they said maybe going over a speed bump or something

They want to replace the system at a cost of approx 3k

They don't leak, Can they be repaired or does it really need replaced or should I do nothing?

They will crack eventually and you will have negative effects of an exhaust leak. I would recommend replacing them with OEM or aftermarket.

Car is 2 yrs old, can the compressed section be replaced somehow or does the whole system need replaced?

$3,000 for OEM headers ? Ahhh, No.

If you're in a .1 997 get yourself a set of these:

Easy DIY in about 90 minutes.

I would not worry about this unless the pipes are cracked. Ive been driving a 20 year old mustang with dimples and dents on the exhaust and headers which occured from bottoming over speed bumps. Unless you were in an all out race condition, you may lose 1-2 hp from a exhaust dimple. But this is nothing to worry about..

Reality is that most factory pipes have bends and dimples due to manufacturing and restrict air flow to create some backpressure. Im sure the aftermarket exhausts are mandrel bent.

My WAG is the hangers have been possibly bent slightly by as you guessed going over a speed bump or something.

It would take a pretty good blow to bend those exhaust pipes. And if they are bent the undersides should show the scars of the impact.

And a quarter of an inch?... that's not much.

As long as the exhaust system is leak free and makes no sounds that suggest it is out of position or making contact with parts it shouldn't, that the hangers are secure and well the system is just in otherwise fine shape, I'd be tempted to let it be.

Before I'd spring for $3K of exhaust system I'd have to have clearer signs that this expense is needed other than a quarter of an inch out of position...

Oh, as others have mentioned, pics would be nice. I'd like to see what the exhaust exits look like relative to rear bumper cover and a snap shot of another car's rear for comparision would be nice too.

Sincerely,

Macster.
