Try redline transmission oil it works wonders on harleys and jeeps.

I think you will find it easier to forget 1st if the car is moving and concentrate on moving the car into 2nd. I use 1st only from dead stop. I never use 1st when rolling at low speeds. This is a 2nd gear car and you will be surprised how flexible it is around town at low speeds.

The first gear syncro's are there to protect the engine from you mistakenly putting into first when you meant 3rd... the consequence is that when in stop-n-go traffic jamms, its difficult to work. I've had good luck at just having the engine idle push in 2nd... or after a stop have it idle-push in 1st and just roll along at that pace.
