Go with the 2009 CPO.

I know exactly what you mean about being confused. I looking for my first Porsche and I started out thinking I wanted a 930 turbo, then after some research, thought about a 964 Turbo. After doing some more research, stretching my budget a bit and getting financial approval from the CFO (a.k.a. Wife) I'm bouncing between a nice 993 "S" or a 997 "S" (997.1 or 997.2) with the 997 "S" requiring additional begging and convincing. My search started on August 1st and it is amazing what I have learned from these forums.

I've also had conversations with Tony Callas and Tom Prine of Callas Rennsport in Torrance, CA and Terry Brewer of TruSpeed in Costa Mesa, CA and all three were incredibly nice and extremely helpful in my search.

It is true what I've heard, "You meet the nicest people in a Porsche". My search continues and I know I'm gonna find her someday.

Good luck in your search...

In general, SKIP 05 and early 06 cars, they might have IMS issues... late '06, '07 are the best .1 cars. There are SOOO MANY good 06/07s around that you DON'T have to settle for an '05.

So, In this case, 09... otherwise you find yourself as good a deal for '06/07.

How do you determine a late 2006 from an early 2006 997.1?

In-service dates... some '06 cars have in-service date of '05.

Do NOT use in-service date to determine early versus late 2006 cars, as Alexb76 recommended. Use the Production date.

An early Production date car could have sat on dealer lot for 9 - 12 months, then finally sold. In-service date would be 9 - 12+ months after Production date.

Agreed... Better determination of the year, although I *thought* there's a limit of putting a car into in-service, like under12 months?

At any rate, prod. year is the better date. Does anyone know WHEN EXACTLY IMS was updated? Like 01-2006? 06-2006, etc...?

Is the sound difference only notable with stock exhausts? I assume a 997.2 with a PSE will still have a reasonably nasty snarl? I'm a sucker for engine sound (have the PSE on my 996) so the subject of different sounds between the two versions is of great interest.

Stock mufflers are not as loud on the 997.2 as the 997.1. That is because the 997.2 has a 3rd muffler, the center muffler. Replace that with a set of muffler by pass pipes, like Sharkwerks, and the 997.2 sound is similar to the 997.1.

Where as in the 997.1 the GT3s and TTs have the old metzger motor that was completely different than what was in the 997.1 S, the 9A1 is good enough Porsche put it in the TT AND it is supposed to be the basis for the new motor for the racing program. The 997.2 is revolutionary compared to the normal evolutionary change for Porsche. And its more of a mid year upgrade than a whole model change but its still a HUGE change. The 9A1 motor has 40% less parts than the 997.1 motor. Its DFI for those who have it its a marvel for those who dont, its "You better have a good warranty" It also has a lower center of gravity. If you can get the S (WHich I would no matter WHAT) you get the new 3.8 which is a dream faster as a 996 TT or GT3 and maybe my 997.2 GT3, and I absolutely destroyed a Corvette going up the hwy 58 pass to Tehachapi. For the S the Z06 is more of a sparring partner than a regular Corvette.
The new motors have higher compression and better oil pumps making that Integrated dry sump term a little more easy to swallow. The suspension was upgraded to handle the extra power. IF you CAN get the S with the PDK it takes off like a Freaking ROCKET in sport PLUS mode with Sport chrono

Thats not even discussing the PDK or the Nav system is much better and much easier to use with a new touch screen. The seat coolers in mine ALONE are a revolution in the High Desert. I dont show up to meetings with WET BACK even though I AM Mexican

With the PDK its the FIRST SCREAMING street car that I have had that is TRULY a daily driver. Yet it will blow most any opponent off the road.
Sorry to get off the NON s topic for a few words there but the 997.2 is a landmark issue for Porsche.
I dont miss any GT3 or TT that I have had with this car.

marvel? c'mon - if that's what you need to feel better about your car....ok, I get that.

as for the other point I highlighted - I'll look forward to you posting that on the GT3/GT3RS forum to watch you get eating ALIVE.

which, by the way, I saw you posted over there that you MISS your GT3.

so which is it? 997.2S = possibly faster than 997GT3? but you miss your GT3?

I'm confused - and possibly I have misinterpreted your points

Actually it sounds better than the 997.1 after the bypass pipes...
