Winter Tires: Pirelli or Dunlop?
It's that time of year again in the mountains of Utah, and I need to find some winter tires for the "new-to-me" 2006 C2S Cab... I am in looking to fit tires on the factory 19s, and am interested in two options:
*Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D
*Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II
Does anyone have deep snow and ice experience with either?
As a side - I plan to buy dedicated 18s in the future (Carrera IIIs) but for this winter, just need snow tires for the occassional times my wife will have the SUV...
Thanks,
-Blake

Answering on inventory levels alone, go with the Dunlops. Pirelli is a no-show so far in the sizes you need and we can't get word from them on when (if) they plan to come to the table this year. The Dunlops are better for their ultimate snow grip anyway. They give a bit of dry traction performance up to the Pirelli, but what do you buy snow tires for? THE SNOW!
Please give me a call please.

Lived in Salt Lake. 10 years and tried both. I was most happy with the Dunlops on Boxter and multiple 911's.

Also, consider Michelin PA2 or PA3... honestly, pick the cheapest of the three... all will do fine.

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on my e92 M3 for the winter season 2009 in Northeast in MD. Drove thru 2 blizzards and had not a problem. They were great in the snow. No issues and would recomend them again. Pirellis no experience with them other than hard to get, less available sizes, and costly!

Thanks guys! I'll definitely go with the Dunlops...
I am hooked on Blizzaks, but unfortunately they don't come in the right size for the 19s on the S. My options are really the Dunlops or the Pirellis as Tire Rack sells both, and they offer great prices...
I keep hearing great things about Nokians, but I can't find a local dealer in Utah. Blizzaks have been amazing in the deep stuff over the years, and are at a better price point than the Nokians. I hop to try them someday though...

I am surprised you don't have a local dealer for Nokians in SLC with all those skiers. I have two sources here - the Porsche dealer and a local tire shop.

i do not think it is good idea to have snow tires on 19" rims. 18" tires will have higher sidewalls, are way cheaper and it ultimately is way more convinient to have those snow tires mounted on a separate set of rims than to re-mount your summer rubber. i would get cheap 18" OZ rims and put on 235/265 michelin PA2 or similar not so expensive tires on them.
