Default pcm "voice control" on 997.2 worth getting?

Managed to get the last order allocation available for a '12 997.2 S in Dallas, so very stoked about that. One issue though - dealer says that other customers have complained about not being happy with the "voice control" PCM feature on 997.2 and recommends against getting it (i.e., pain in **** to use, doesn't recognize or pick up voice commands consistently, etc.). Any thoughts on this from those who have ordered this option? Wondering if it is worth the $500 to add that option in light of the dealer's comments/recommendations - sounds like it has a number of bugs so as to justify strictly touchsreen instead - would appreciate any feedback on this issue....thanks!

I would not order it again. No problems - just never use it.

I have had this feature on a couple of our cars and we rarely use it. I have not heard of issues with it on Porsche but cant imagine talking to the car much.

I just ordered the option on a new GTS. My BMW's voice command function hasn't been so great either, but while commuting, it's better than fiddling around with a cell phone. Like you, I'm not certain if it will be decent or not, but for 700 bucks, it's a pretty low cost gamble. If I keep the car 5 years and it's worth 50% of actual price at that time, it's cost me $350.

fwiw, I have it in another car. And I actually use it all the time. I like keeping my eye the road and the VC solves that. Using the nav, phone, or audio media can be distracting when using buttons or a touch screen. All it takes is looking away even for a few seconds and bam....

btw, it works great after you get it to recognize your voice by going through the voice recognition exercises.

Have it on my '12 black edition, works about 20% of the time. I would opt for it in the future.

Did you state that correctly? Even though it only works 20% of the time you'd still get it in the future?

Yep I blame it on my voice not the VC, I had throat cancer and my voice is not that clear. It seems to work for my wife much better and it sure is nice option to have for her when she drives the car.

I have it on my 997.2 and used it for 2+ years now.

I use it to change audio sources and radio stations. Works great for that - other than FM stations where you say the call-signs and the voice recognition has problems with some combos.

It works great for not having to take hands off wheel to change audio from sat to disc to ipod to fm.

I have not used it for changing other settings beyond audio.

I absolutely would get it again.

What about for phone use? Can you say "call Diego" and it will reliably work?

I guess it depends on what you expect from voice recognition too... Pretty much on most car systems out there, you need to know the exact format/order/pattern of commands and when to say what, as they don't really understand normal spoken "conversation".

Of the systems we've had, our Toyota and Lexus is the worst, it didn't even recognize the exact stated command word quite often. BMW and an aftermarket Pioneer in the GT3 are OK, sometimes hit or miss but it depends on the background noise and maybe I'm not getting the syntax right. But the best so far has been the 997.2 Porsche... without training the system yet to recognize my voice, and without reading any manuals, on the way home after picking up the 997.2 from the dealer, I used it to call home dialing by number! Perhaps a simple test, but in this case it was right on 100% for my first try.

So to that extent, I give it a since I was able to use it right out of the box!
