Default Difference between Carrera vs Carrera S

I am in the market for a 2007/2008 Carrera S but have seen a few well priced Carrera's and wondering what would I be losing if I didn't get the S series? Any insight welcomed.

S has a few more ponies (30?) but the general consensus is that its not really felt ..
It also comes standard with some equipment most notably PASM, 19" wheels and Xenon headlight (I believe)

3.6L vs 3.8L

bigger brakes, bigger wheels (19s) + other things noted above

Apart what was mentioned above..
Tail Pipes are different I think
Black on Base and Red Calipers (yellow if PBCC) on S
HeadLamp Spray - who uses those ?

here is a tad more details as far as performance..etc https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...7-vs-997s.html

good luck !

search a bit.
'S' 997.1 car has PASM as stock (base car may have as option), xenon lights (option on base), 3.8L engine (3.6L on base), bigger red brakes, self-adjusting clutch.

on used market it all depends of what options you get with base car.

now of my opinion - i do not like PASM in 997.1 cars at all. SPASM in 997.2 cars is awesome, in 997.1 cars imho base stock suspension is better. power wise difference is also not that much between 3.6 and 3.8. so look at what options you get in each car and choose wisely.

When I bought my S, I drove a Carrera right before hand I found there to by a noticible power increase over the two. It wasn't a HUGE difference but you could notice it quite a bit driving around town. The extra size helps in low end TQ to get you around corners quicker. Also, the brakes are much better in stopping the car from highway speed. If you are the kind of person that likes to drive like its a normal car, stay with the standard Carrera, if you like to go fast or plan on tracking it, the S is much better. Utkinpol, why is it you don't like the PASM in the first gen cars?

997.1 street pasm is too soft in normal mode and i did not like it how it felt in sport mode.

try to test drive 997.1 gt3 rs with its pasm and compare it to street 's' car. 'S' suspension was compromised too much to be on a soft side overall imho. i do not argue about power diffs and more torque from bigger displacement but still 3.6 vs 3.8 diff is nothing compared to 408 horses from GTS car.
speaking of which - if anybody can find extra coin to get 997.2 2009 'S' car - it is way, way better than 997.1 car motor wise. electronics are also much better than in 2008 car. as it is 2011 now and 2012 is coming - right way to buy 3 year old car is to look for 2009 now. 997.1 2006/2007 was a good car to search for in 2009. not now.

What do you want it for? Daily driver? Track use? Weekend car? Also - How do you like to drive? What led you a 911 over a boxster or cayman?

In short, there is a Porsche (and 911) for every occassion... As a DD, I love my 997.1. But for the track, I wouldn't have it any other way than a GT3... For me, the S offered the red calipers (bigger breaks), nice standard options (white dials & litronic headlights as standard) among a few other elements... You can't go wrong with either, so it really depends on use case...

I disagree... I have done back to back .1 to .2 drive in NURBURGRING, and the difference is VERY VERY minimal... and actually I liked .1 engine and exhaust and enjoyed it A LOT MORE than .2 (even if 30 HP less).

Buy 997.2 ONLY IF you need/prefer the EXTRA options offered in .2 that was not avialable in .1, namely:

- PDK
- Sport PASM
- Touchscreen NAV and Bluetooth (can do aftermarket in .1)

That's all (I ommitted LSD as it's been very insignificant)... if you want any of the above, the .2 premium is worth it, otherwise .1 is 95% of .2 and even more fun/more raw at a huge discount.

if money isn't an issue, no reason to get the smaller engine.

I enjoy my S and had the same question in mind before making the call.
The real differences between base and S might not be that big and it's subjective but for the price difference (used car) I would say it is a good deal.
I know I won't be thinking back and tell myself wish I had spend the extra $3000 or so for a S.
I haven't got the mod bug growing on the 911 yet but guess the 30HP difference would cost quite a bit to make up via after market mods.
