Default Poll: How much oil has your 997.2 consumed in first 5000 miles?

Tell us how many quarts of oil your 997.2 Carrera, Targa, Turbo, GT2/3, etc. has consumed during the FIRST 5000 miles. If you have not driven 5000 miles, then calculate the amount you expect to add based on initial results. For example, if you have added 1.5 quarts of oil during the first 3000 miles, then 5000/3000 * 1.5 = 2.5.

Choose the number that most closely matches.

Suggested guidelines for this thread:

Please post any relevant details about oil consumption, for example (and I am just making this up):

- You added 1 qt first 1000 miles, and then 1 qt every 3000 miles thereafter
- You only drive your GT3 on the track and it burns 1 qt per weekend
- Your car stopped consuming oil after 15000 miles
- Your car was burning excessive oil and Porsche discovered and fixed the problem

Also, feel free to post your oil consumption along with driving habits/break-in procedure.

Please do not use this thread as a yelling contest or to argue about oil consumption. There are well established threads for this. You know, for example: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...nsumption.html

Thanks!

I voted 1/4 to 1/2 quart, but only have 1,000 miles on my 2012 GTS. So far, the oil level indicator shows no oil loss/burn.

In the first 5k (in 7 months) on my GTS, I lost one bar on the oil level display.
I did not top it off since I had my oil changed at 5000 miles.
No track time, all miles a combo of city/highway driving.

I got my '09 C2S at 3k miles and had to add 1.5 qt when it got to 5k miles. It's currently at 12k and I've added a total of 4 qts (that includes the 1.5). The rate has dropped off in the last couple of thousand miles, but I've had my 2nd oil change since then. I'm hoping the rate of oil consumption drops off.

My 2009 Carrera S used right at 6 quarts with in 5000 miles. It used 1 quart in the 1st 500 miles! My dealer had the car in on a oil usage program to monitor it. After around 10,000 miles if settled down to using around 1 quart every 1200-2000 miles depending on if the car was tracked, driven hard or driven lightly.

So far in 1400 miles my 2012 GTS has not used any oil.

You observe no actual oil use but voted usage ?!?

Well, I stated that in the first 1,000 miles, the oil level indicator did not show any oil usage. Since that is a low number of miles and the poll asked for how much use in 5,000 miles, I chose 1/4 to 1/2 quart since I did not know what would happen in the next 4,000 miles, and 1/4 to 1/2 usage is very low. Had I chosen 0 usage based on the first 1,000 miles, I am sure there would have been people, probably you, that would have questioned why I chose 0 usage.

Can you possibly understand that?????

So we should have had the first choice read <less than 1/4 quart.
Because otherwise 40% (currently) are lying. There is no way an engine runs 5000miles and not consumes any oil at all.

That is exactly why I chose 1/4 to 1/2 for my car with 0 usage showing for the first 1,000 miles.

Maybe I shouldn't have voted since I only have 1,000 miles, but if my engine was going to use large amounts of oil, I would think it would have shown usage in the first 1,000 miles.

I used one liter but that was the result of heavy duty track days (5) used a half liter each time. On the road, no indication of oil consumption between changes. This is a 997.2 2009 C4S.

Note reference to 997.2 GT3 and RS cars don't fit this poll since they use a very different engine from the DFI in the 997.2 Carrera and its variations including the GTS.

I understand it quite well and I disagree with your reply. When one answers a poll, one answers what one knows at that point in time - one does not predict the future, or the poll is worthless.

The question was: how much oil was used in the 1st 5k miles? If your car has 1k miles and uses no oil your answer is zero. You do not predict the future. If you 'believe' that the car will use oil, wait until it does and answer the poll at that time.

All engines use some oil, but a no-oil-burning engine uses so little that it does not register in a 3-step discrete level scale, therefore according to that scale the answer is zero.

Incidentally... the precision of the 3-level discrete scale is +- 1/2 step.

It would be interesting to see how this data overlays on those owners who observed the "proper Porsche break in procedure" vs those who did not.

Precision or accuracy? You state precision, just want to make sure.
