I think it's a Golden Eagle.

Three Wheelin'
Could be a Goshawk. They are used in Falconry so that would explain it's unafraid behavior around humans. The patterns on juvenile goshawks, however, are more stripped and the plumage in the pictures appears more mottled. It's also important to know the location. A lot of animal ID's are based on where something is observed. If the picture was taken in VA, it is unlikely (but not impossible) that it was a Goshawk. They are typically only winter residents in this area (and only in the Tidewater) and observed very infrequently during bird counts. Hard to know for sure.

interesting comments about the type of bird he is. i've no idea but he was absolutely beautiful and had no fear as i approached him.
Tammy and I were wondering how and what would motivate him to just show up like this.
rewind to last weekend. we're out laying by the pool with our new puppy and cat. they're running around the back yard. i notice 3 hawks flying at different levels almost triangulating above us and the neighboring houses. thought nothing of it at the time but now it makes complete sense.
could it be they saw the small animals and memory banked our house ? and then sent the hawk/eagle in for a closer mission a few days later ? don't know.... but it was beyond freaky he was just sat on the porch bannister when i pulled in that morning. as if he was waiting for something.
anyhow, puppy and cat aren't allowed outside the house for awhile. wonder if he'll come back......
