Default Is this rust on the exhaust?

Just picked up a new 2012 C2S...and noticed a brownish red discoloration on my exhaust system. Is this normal?

Ah the smell of cosmoline! Funny, that some cars still have it and others do not. I wonder if it has to do with shipping route and/or carrier.

Why the heck did they have to spray it all over the exhaust piping?

So it doesn't rust

Actually I'm not sure if they do spray it on the exhaust, it may just be dripping down from the engine. As you run the car in, it will melt & burn off. Enjoy the smell!

Hey, peoples, that brown stuff is still there on my muffler, it hasn't burned off. How can you tell is it's cosmoline vs. rust?

Cosmoline will feel waxy. You can scrub it off with a cleaner and a stiff plastic brush.

What cleaner will remove cosmoline, but not rust?

That's because it takes like 20,000 miles for it to burn off.

It may be heat discoloration. Cosmoline can be removed with a little effort. I like to have the cosmoline off so that the engine is completely dry and much easier to discover any seeps that might creep up.

Strangely, I haven't seen anyone else's exhaust with brown discoloration.

It was there when I picked up the car with 30 miles on the odo. Why would there be heat discoloration?
