Question Calling Targa owners.

I am serioiusly looking at a Targa as a compromise between the coupe (the shape of which I love) and the cab (the ability to open) for our Canadian climate in Alberta. I have been warned that because of all the moving parts ie sun screen, glass roof panel, rear hatch, that these cars develop rattles easily. Any owners out there like to comment?

When you hit a bump or a pothole you can hear the roof components moving against their seals. It's a series of thud sounds rather than rattles. There's an occasional creak from the roof when turning onto an inclined driveway. It's not as solid as a coupe, but no worse than convertibles I've owned in the past.

I'm loving that rendering. Sadly I doubt the reality'll be anything like so cute. So like the 1970s original (in white) I fell in love with as a pre-teen.

FJO66: I've owned my 2007 Targa 4 for almost 4 years and I'm 100% happy with the purchase. I've only seen 4 other targas. I know they are quite rare. I do have some minor rattles during the cold months but cracking the rood a bit will get rid of them. I have no rattles at all in the warmer months. I enjoy opening the roof and drive this way 99% of the time. Remember, the Targa is the only 997 series with a hatch that opens making loading very easy. I have been asked by other 997 series owners who installed the hatch when they see it open.. They are amazed to leard the car comes that way. I have 50,105 very happy miles on my car. The level of rattle or squeak is directly proportional to two input variables:
  1. The crappieness of the road surface you are on
  2. The outside temperature

If you drive very rough, bumpy roads, things may rattle.. just like your door trays, and other storage bins.. if the road is good and smooth, no issues.

If its colder, the rubber seals get a bit firmer and can occasionally squeak (again, more on rougher roadways).

I doubt that. Who would to buy that exactly.. it gives up so much of the benefit of the current Targa:
  • You loose the rear hatch.
  • You now have to remove roof panels and put them somewhere in all that spacious 911 storage space.

I had one in '07.....really liked it. But the cold weather rattles and creaks made me sell it. Shame really.

+1 on that...love the original targa with the removable roof panel. If that rendering is accurate, I'm getting one but I doubt it.

There is a fabulous thread for reducing the rattles on the targa roof here. I had some noise issues until I followed the advice in the thread and no longer have any rattles. The Targa is great in cold weather as it is so bright in the cockpit that it is a pleasure to drive. No reason to rave about warm weather and nice evenings that is obvious. If I had to buy another car today I would only buy the Targa

I had a 993 Targa and a 996 Targa. Never found it annoying in any way. The rear hatch is also nice and gives you some useable extra storage with easy access. I am not a cab fan, but would consider a Targa again in the future.

And though I doubt they will build it, I do like that 991 rendering and the retro look.

I had a 2009 Targa 4s trade in March for a Turbo S Cab. I loved the targa never had a leak, rattle no problems at all loved the Hatch way more room than a Cab. If I could have had a Turbo S Targa I would have bought that in a heart beat!!!!!!!!

Go for it I seriously don't think you will regret the buy.

Just traded my Targa 4S a few weeks ago for the C4S I have now. There's a lot I miss about that Targa and I even learned to live with the rattles - there were a lot of them - but in the end, it was fact that mine was so bare bones and I wanted a few of the other options that came with C4S. So if you can find a well equipped Targa, go for it. I don't think you'll regret it. There aren't many around though so finding one with everything you want may be tough.

Best of luck!
Greg

No rattles in the 991.2, but creaking, lots of that
