AWD Drivers... Why? (Genuine Question)
#16
My car is not exactly a daily driver. (I live in the city and use the subways during the week.) But I do use the car every weekend to get to my all-year summer house or go north to ski country.
While it spends its time in the city in a garage, on weekends the car stays is outside and may have to cope with unploughed or icy roads. Not driving home is not an an option.
Add to the above, that I am far from the best driver and getting AWD seems a no-brainer.
And, oh yes, I like the way that the wide body looks.

Another 2 cents... I have a C2S and I love it. I don't notice the difference between the look of the wider C4S and mine but I feel it is more spirited and fun to drive at lower speeds (less than 120mph). Which is 98% of what I do. Having said that, at speeds above 120 I definitely notice the lighter front end. The spoiler is not big enough at those speeds to disturb the wing effect of the car and you can feel it lift. Whoa baby! If you're not doing a lot of track or high speed driving I would drop the consideration on the 2 Vs 4 and find a very nice interior with lots of options. That's what you'll be seeing most of the time.

Drifting
Helps with the winter tires here in the Puget Sound region with the sudden snow storms and large quantity of inclines and lack of large amounts snow clearing gear.
Also, AWD drives more like on rails, which I like, vs the back end being more free, which I don't like. Personal style/taste thing.

I've owned both wide and narrow body 997 cars and I have a very difficult time seeing the difference. It's not as distinct as it was with the older cars. Take off the badging and I'd have a rough time picking the wide body car unless the angle is just right.
I don't like what what the 4wd does to the steering feel and weight is the enemy. Make mine 2wd, thanks.

Well, ok. You busted me. But if I had a 4 my wife might start busting me. It's bad enough as it is right now with a not-all-that skinny 2... My son even complains that I love my car more than him. I've explained that if Zeus gets hurt it cost money to repair him whereas he'll heal himself (joke of course...).

I am going to be getting a newer 09+ 911 in the near future and after driving a 12 4s in the rain the other day, i told my dealership to find me a car and if it was a 4s, more the better.. i like the idea of my wife being a little safer in the bad weather in the awd car..

I drove both C2S and C4S prior to making my choice for a DD. I chose the C4S because of the wider back, more stability and "heftiness" in steering, and more planted feel. It is WAY easier to slide the rear in the C2S (which is good and bad I guess), but for a DD I wanted the C4S. Now, my GT3...that's a different story!

1.73 inches can be really hard to see. That's the difference in width between a 4 and a 2 (997).
On the 996 cars the difference was 2.30 inches.

Unless you are the guy in the room who has it!
On a serious note. I DD a C2S for three years and now DD a C4S. The front end is noticeably lighter in the C2S, especially when low on fuel. The C2S is twitchy compared to the C4S. I really like both, but have a slight preference for the more planted feel of the 4.

The cure for the front end lightness lies on the sport Pasm suspension option, so much better planted, and especially at speed. Then again, I heard that the entry speed to a corner may be the same for C2 and a C4, but the exit speed is higher for the C4; you can get on power earlier on the curve with a C4.
