Difference between Carrera S 2005 vs 2006
#16
also if I do go with a 2006 and it did have a IMS failure is there a way to know by having a mechanic look at the car if the seller doesn't share that information? Also if it did have a IMS failure and was fixed is it possible for it to occur again in the future?

If the previous owner had an IMS failure, there is a 99.999% chance that it destroyed the original engine. Consequently, the car will have a re manufactured engine in it now.

There was a survey done here a few days ago. It indicated a very low IMS failure problem (~4%), and it was not for one particular year. Have the car checked out throughly, get a sense of how the owner treated the car, etc. It is more about abuse or lack thereof rather than years. Best.

I have a 2005 997 Launch edition. Other than the TSBs being addressed, the car has been perfect. 45k miles and not one problem. Doing a scheduled Porsche major service next month and will be changing serpentine belt as a preventative measure. LN sells an engine oil analysis kit so you can monitor gradual failure of IMS bearing. I'm NOT at all concerned about the IMS. I bought through private party with NO warranty

Have a mechanic who is knowledgable with P-cars to use an automobile stethoscope to listen to an IMS in operation. A failing IMS will made a specific sound. This is one thing I had done before purchasing my 2006 C4S.

search this and renntech forums.
plus, first of all - ALL 3.6L engines are M96. M97 is a 3.8L engine.
M96 starting from some particular engine number got updated single row bearing. Street word is that any '06 car built in second part of 2006 year will be safe. Note that some '06 cars were built in '05 and will not have it.
So, those 'late' '06 cars with June+ build date will have updated IMS bearing, they will have new sub-version of PCM electronics, navigation DVD module is newer too. most important issue there was that those 'late' cars ot also an updated primary ECU - if you search TPC turbo thread on 6speedonline you will see more info about implications.
For those buyers who will keep car stock none of that matters much. IMS bearing can be replaced on '05 car with some aftermerket solutions when you buy this car if it still got a stock one.

I havnt had any engine problems, it just goes quicker than any of the 2005-6-7-8-9 models thats for sure.
Everytime it gets a service the new techs even say the same thing.
I rekon you guys out there with your newer motors may have been taxed some grunt?.
Well worth looking into when u buy.
