I meant to report back sooner but now that the temps are scorching here in Texas I was reminded when I popped the engine compartment lid this afternoon to help the cool down, I lock the car and the light goes out in about 10 minutes - 08 997.1 - no need to remove the bulb - same with the luggage compartment light.

My light takes much longer to go out, so I simply trick the rear decklid by depressing the trigger inside the lid's receptacle.

for everybody's information, the light is simply removed like any other courtesy light in the car. There is a tab on one side of the light that fits a flat screwdriver, one simply uses this to pry out the light. then you can remove the bulb if you wish to. less than a 2 minute job. However, it seems that most of our brothers are right in saying the light turns off in a few hours. this willnot drain the battery though for sure it shortens the life of the bulb. the bulb is very cheap. so i guess i would not worry about this.
