Default Newbie about to seal the deal on a 997

I've put down a deposit on a 2009 911 PDK coupe. 18,000 miles and CPO'd until 2015

I saw the car and it looked great but I'm just going by a 15mins test drive and my eye balling the car for 10 mins with limited technical know-how.

I read the threads about DME and PPI's on CPO'd cars.... I'm waiting on the DME report and will determine if PPI is necessary

Assuming I will elect for a PPI I would appreciate any Chicagoland peoples to recommend a mechanic...

BTW the car is at Napleton Porsche and both the sales and service people there have been great so far

Cheers

Don't worry about DME on a PDK, no way to over-rev. Make sure someone you trust looks for body work, check with paint meter.

The dealers lie... somethings unintentionally(is that possible?). I picked up my '08 CPO'd C2S last month. Nice dealership and sales rep... insisted that the CPO covered me until 2014 so no need for a PPI. That's when I got really suspicious. Did one any way... the indy mech found a RMS leak and noise in the exhaust system(broken exhaust tip). I still bought the car after they replaced/serviced all the issues plus I got another $1K off the price I had negotiated with them before the PPI... PPI cost $300 so net gain of an additional $700 by doing one. Not to mention those p-car tips go for ~$600. You have everthing to gain by doing a PPI including peace of mind... Best of luck and enjoy the ride once you get it.

It is foolish to spend so much money on a car and not elect to spend $250 on a PPI.
They check a lot of items - frame damage, paint thickness, mechanicals, leaks, etc.

Get the PPI done at another dealer and they will be especially persnickety.

Even with a CPO car, sure, you're covered, but you're still 'out of service' while something is fixed. A PPO will spot any unforeseen problems like Poster #3 had, and they can be rectified before you buy.
It's really cheap insurance.

You guys have me sold on doing the PPI... it only makes sense

I'm going to start searching for independent shops in the area to get it done - any recommendations would be appreciated!

I'm not local so I will need to coordinate this by phone maybe I can get somebody to go to Westmont and do the PPI??

Loeber Porsche would be my recommendation for the PPI as they are the largest in Chicagoland. Westmont is ok also.

I got a price on PPI from fluidmotor - $85/hour... expected 1 hour but this seems pretty quick to me??

Chicago Performance suggested 4 hours - and $300 excluding compression or leakage tests which would be more... Loeber is about the same

Any other recommendations?... I'm leaning towards Loeber for now

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I can't believe a "broken exhaust tip" would make any noise. The tips, IMO, appear to be purely cosmetic.

Another good option is Perfect Power in Buffalo Grove.

Napleton Porsche is great as well!

The bracket that holds the tips to the exhaust pipe could have been broken which would keep it from being tightened securely to the exhaust pipe.

I'm not sure why you would think that. The tips are attached to the exhaust, which shakes and moves around a lot. Even if the bolts are just loose the tips will make noise. If the tips were cracked or just not secure in any way they will make a racket.

(a common source of noise is the tips hitting the bumper due to the exhaust movement)
