Second car to the 997, aka beater
As I live in the frozen tundra of Chicago, I am only able to enjoy the 997 about 6 months of the year. Its really hard to drive something instead of the 997 once you experience it but I know this has to come to an end when it snows. Any suggestions on a beater car?
I see alot of members have a cayenne s. I like the performance and particality of it but the looks are not the best. Also not sure how much I want to have "invested" in these depreciating assets as I hardly drive much in general.
Ps- my current beater is a E46 M3 vert which I am trying to sell, if anyone is interested?

The other car company, besides of Porsche, that offers flat engines is Subaru... So I guess a Subaru as a second/winter/beater car might not be a bad pairing to the 997

opinions on that subject have tendency to spread from toyota prius to panameras. kinda impossibe to say, people prefer to do what fits them best.
for me i do not care what DD I have, i run errands in wife`s accord all the same as in our old lexus. it is just a car, get what your budget allows. or just keep driving 997 all year round.

Have a look at a nice heavy 2001 E38 740i. This is an excellent $120k car that you can pick up for not a whole lot.

FWIW, I have an X5d that I drive daily. Good all-around vehicle, but if they put a diesel in the new X3, I would recommend that instead.

I guess I was thinking more SUV style. X5's made pretty well these days? I remember back in the day they were kind of cheaply made. Cayenne S vs X5, which is better these days? I looked to range rovers and I must say the build quality is horrible, plus they are just a service mess.

Since you don't drive much, how about a vehicle that complements the Porsche, does what it can't do, and is good in the Chicago winter? For me that's a 2002 Range Rover, but a Toyota 4Runner would be more reliable. Great for hauling stuff, taking the family skiing, and has great visibility in nasty weather. I really appreciate my 997S after I've driven the RR for a couple days. And when I'm tired or the weather is bad I like the fully automatic ease of use and commanding view from the RR.

Even an old aircooled VW sounds better. I would go with a VW GTI or stripped Golf.
