That's very strange that they changed the service interval for 2008.IMO around 40-50k miles you generally get the coil packs starting to fail, and that's a good time to go ahead and do the plugs.
It seems to me that with the shortened intervals for spark plug and oil changes with 2008 MY, it does not indicate that the 2008 is different but that Porsche has learned a few things along the way for the 997.

Porsche cannot re-write the pre-2008 owners manuals but if I owned a pre-2008 MY Porsche, I would use the reduced intervals as the minimum level of service. I change the oil once per year which is about every 3000 miles. ( I know........ I need to drive it more)

The recommended service is premature and the quoted figure is outrageous. This is how dealers drive their customers away. Go by the milage figure and don't worry about plugs degrading in the cylinder head when they are not in use. An early problem should be seen in a cel or a reduction in gas milage.
