Default IMS or RMS issue with 2005 997

Porsche has been my dream car for many years and I finally plan to buy a 2005 997C2 with 35k miles from a private party. This is a CPO car and the extended warranty will expire within 1 month of the purchase. I am new to this forum and I see many concerns around IMS and RMS for the car. What is the best way to protect myself from the IMS and RMS issue? I plan to take the car to a dealer and have inspect everything and fix before the warranty runs out. Is it possible for the dealer to replace/repair the IMS and RMS as a preventive measure using the warranty?

If not, my options would be:

Option1: Buy Fidelity Extended warranty $4000 for 2 years.
Option2: Replace/Repair IMS and RMS (pay out of my pocket $2000???)

Thank.

If you do a search on this issue, you will spend the rest of the night and most of Monday reading the information available to you. Great information on this from MANY well informed people that frequent this forum. Give it a try. (no disrespect intended)

+1, I was up until about 3 AM researching this, and today I spend about 3.5 hrs, appears to be a small risk, but if it happens it will leave a big mark on your checkbook depending on income level.

$4000 for 2 years seems a little steep.

I've spent all this weekend researching this. Yet, I still don't know what would be best way to protect my Porsche from a big mark (at least $10K ) on my checkbook. I agree, $4k for 2 years of extended warranty seems a little steep. Here is the quote from a Porsche dealer. I also heard that Easy Care is another good extended warranty but the Porsche dealers around me don't carry them. What is the best way to buy an extended warranty?

PLATINUM Coverage with Fidelity Warranty Services, Inc.

Term/Mileage - $100 / $50 disappearing deductible
2yr/24k $3939 / $4466
3yr/36k $5011 / $5774
4yr/48k $6189 / $7211
4yr/60k $7135 / $8335
5yr/60k $8090 / $9290

GOLD PLUS Coverage with Fidelity Warranty Services, Inc.

Term/Mileage - $250 / $100 / $50 disappearing deductible
2yr/24k $3595 / $4046
3yr/36k $4480 / $5126
4yr/48k $5453 / $6313
4yr/60k $6235 / $7267
5yr/60k $7024 / $8224

I bought my '05 in January last year with 25K miles on it, non-CPO. After research, I elected to buy Carchex extended warranty, covers as OEM-type for 4 more years/up to 75K miles for $3250. I tried to buy Warranty Direct but they wouldn't cover me in Florida (although I continue to get solicitations from them..??) I have used the warranty for an alternator failure and water pump failure at my local independent with no issues. $100 deductible. I'm one of those people who likes to have the insurance policy, just in case (paranoia) even though the odds of a problem appear very small. It's saved me about $1000 or so at this point....

The dealer will need to remove the clutch to inspect the IMS/RMS, no quick or cheap task. Do you have a complete service history?

BTW, the basic Powertrain plan from Fidelity covers the IMS.

The IMS retrofit from LN Engineering might be a cheaper insurance policy.
I'm not sure what the total bill is including labor.
I bet there's a thread on that topic too here.

Thanks all for your feedback. Very good point about the basic powertrain warrant covers the IMS problem. I will try to get a quote on that Monday. Retrofit IMS is another good option. I will be taking over the car next Saturday and looks like I have a lot of phone calls to make.

Because your sig has my brother's name I will tell you what I told him. I have yet to see conclusive evidence showing there is an issue with the '05s. I and other '05 owners will tell you that they run great. You simply can't predict every potential issue out there. Every machine has the potential for failure. If it makes you feel any better-get the extended warranty. I did that just before mine ran out. Cheers.

Can you please share your experience with the extended warranty purchase? which one did you get? How much and how did you buy it? Thanks!

I woudl say if the car has 35k miles on it to date and has not yet had the RMS issue it likely is not going to have that. IMS can happen to any car at any moment. you might check with easycare too for another aftermarket warranty company.

Just for grins you might try United Auto Care for a quote. My dealer (Penske owned) uses them.
My car is still CPO'd until December, 2005 w/10k miles on it and the quote was $2500 for the
Platinum policy for when the CPO ends.

On a rear wheel drive, 6speed manual 996/997 that does not need a clutch/flywheel or an RMS, my indy will install the LN bearing for $2360 and that includes the price of the bearing. If they have to replace the RMS is might be $150 more. Just an FYI.
