Happened to me 2 weeks ago. Gas at the track was $9 a gallon. Got gas at a 2 pump station 5 miles from track and 2 miles later misfiring started. That screwed up the rest of the track day. P dealer first thought coils and replaced. Did not do it. Then went gas route and drained. Water visible in gas. Purged lines and replaced one sparkplug. Problem fixed. BTW, gas station the only one close to Nashville superspeedway. Please avoid. Like someone else said, fill up at busy stations.

Move to Canada!

Here we can get 94 Octane, 0% ethanol from Chevron!

Appreciate all of the input. I'm going to try fuel from the busiest station (I literally just filled up), no sta-bil and see what happens.

It may be something else. I'm 50 and I've never had one bad tank of gas until now (and you guys have me believing it's possibly not the gas). It's just crazy that it happened once from a fill up at an Exxon in Charleston, SC, drained the tank, ran 5 tanks of fuel (still have the receipts, car ran perfectly), then stop at a mobil franchise, C-store in Columbia and it does it again when the fuel level dropped to just above an eighth of a tank.

The car has 39K miles.....Time for new coil packs and plugs as suggested?

I'll keep you posted.....

Is it possible that the first time the shop did not drain all the water/diesel out of the tank? Maybe they underestimated the problem and thought diluting it with 95% good gas would be sufficient. And then the first time you got close enough to empty to hit the bad stuff again was only after 5 refills? Just a thought that would do away with the "coincidence" issue that is troubling all of us.

If there was water in the fuel you'd notice first, not at the end of your tank. Water sinks in fuel.

Stick with premium, go to a 93 octane non ethanol fuel if you can find it. That's all I run in my car now. Only buy from a busy "branded" station, i.e. Sunoco, Chevron, Shell etc. Stay away from non-branded convenience stores.
E-10 blended fuels are notorious for phase separation between water and fuel and are the bane of boaters. Additives cost a fortune and aren't worth it if you buy from a reputable source.

You all probably know this too but don't buy fuel while the tanker is there dropping fuel into the tanks and stirring them up.

So how did this saga end?? I am having the same issue w/ my 84'. Had some routine work done at a shop that Seinfeld trusts all 70 of his Porsches with. Most significant thing done was changing a leaking lower left side valve gasket. Drove like a champ from the shop and 7 miles later I had to fill up at a gas station I knew was struggling. I filled up w/ 93 at this Mobil, that since a huge modern shell opened across the street, had been giving away a free cup of Joe w/ every fillup! Since I filled it up, I had a rough idle, low end stumble and a pop inbetween high rpm shifting. Since then I have driven it hard about 400 miles, put in octane boost, dry gas and filled in small increments a few times w/ 93 at a Mobil that has a lot of activity. Symptoms are definitely improving, but not gone yet.
