Default 997.2 PCM Audio System Question

My 2011 GTS has an audio system quirk that I'm trying to figure out. At worst, it's mildly annoying...at best, it's mysteriously entertaining.

Here's what it does. Put the key in the ignition, audio system comes on wherever it was when last used (radio, SAT, USB, etc.). Hit the MUTE button, system mutes. Put car in reverse to back out of garage, audio comes out of mute within 3-4 seconds all by itself. Hit MUTE again, system mutes.

Pull out of driveway, proceed up the street, audio system comes out of mute again (untouched!).

Hit the MUTE button, system mutes again. Drive for several minutes (maybe 10-12?), system takes itself out of mute again.

Sound familiar to anyone? If so, why does this happen?
If it's not familiar to you, what do you think might be happening?
Anything to do with Bluetooth and my iPhone, perhaps? This happens without any iPhone activity that I'm aware of.

As my 997.1 had no MUTE button, this problem was a moot point on that car. (Sorry.)

My 2011 C2S does the same thing. What I do is turn the volume down a little before hitting mute so it does not blast when it comes back on or I just turn the volume all the way down. Everything else runs great so I would rather not have anyone touch my car to fix this minor nuisance.

You have PCM 3 right? My '10 PCM 3 does not come out of Mute. It will if the Source is cut off, like removing an iPod.

Hmm - never had it in mute that long as best I can remember - will have to try it.

I've not had that issue on my 09. I'm driving to Columbus tomorrow so I'll have time to test it. I'll let you know.

I've never had this issue with my '09 Carrera. When I use the mute button (press the volume control ****) it stays muted even when the car is turned off and then restarted. The same is true if I turn off the car with the volume on; it remembers whatever state the radio was in when I turned it off and doesn't ever change arbitrarily. FWIW, I have the Bose system and my PCM version is the factory original 1.0. Sounds like maybe a good reason not to do the upgrade.

Is it possible there is a variable parameter for muting in the latest PCM version; ie you can specifiy the mute time?

Perhaps it's a new "safety" design factor for when a car is in reverse? Check your manual first for any insight. I would not care for that sort of nanny-watch on my car.

My 2010 PCM doesn't have the problem. What happens in mute stays in mute.

Maybe oversensitive switch, affected by movement of the car ?
Could change with use over time ?

Maybe it had to do something with park assist? Volume can't be muted so you can hear the beeps?

No such problem in my 2009 C2S. Mute stays in mute.
I do know that the PCM in 2009 and 2010/2011 are different. When I had my car serviced last December, the latest update for my PCM 3.0 is v1.44. Other 2010/2011 cars have v2.10 (or something like that).

I've had the mute disengage on me once when I started the car on my 2009 997.2. I cannot be certain what the source was.. it may have been I muted with the iPod as the source, and as the system does, it drained the battery of the device over several days so on a start of the car, the iPod was initially dead until it got some minimal charge, and so would have disappeared as the source.

Still, to unmute seems like the wrong behavior in any case other than an incoming phone call or traffic program announcement.

I'm surprised there isn't more discussion of this issue. Mine has the same problem. I find it annoying - every time I start up the car, the radio comes on when it had been previously muted. It un-mutes every time it regains a signal. If I have it muted and drive through a tunnel or dense trees that would block the signal, it un-mutes upon exit. Same for turning the car off in an open area - once started, it re-gains the satellite signal and un-mutes itself.

I'm usually listening so I've not tested this.. I just hear the static come on or the XM drop out when I get in tunnels and behind mountains and hills. I'll try to mute the next time I'm out and see what my 2009 997.2 PCM3 system does with FM or the XM sources muted as the signal cuts out and back in again.

I tried this yesterday and my car will stay in mute until I shut it down and then restart it.
