I recall over a total of 170,000 996s were produced. You need to subtract 996 turbos and GT3s but add 05 and 06 997s. 986s(Boxsters) were also made with M96 engines.

So - even if it was only 100,000 M96 engines produced and the IMS failure rate was 5% which is the estimated percentage from the threads I have read, that's 5,000 engines. I think if 5,000 Porsche engines blew up there would be quite an uproar with negative press, not to mention negative advertising from competitors. Wonder what the real numbers are, and what it is that makes these failures happen to one engine and not another identical engine made the same day on the same assembly line. It really bugs me to own a car that I really like with this potential issue.

Porsche's made over 200,000 Boxsters! (M96 engined based) so the problem isn't limited to just 997s.
IMS and RMS are two problems. Early Boxster motors also had porosity problems, slipped sleeves.. 996s had D chunking as well. When these cars were NEW, Porsche quickly and quietly would simply remove the motors and replace them, at no expense to the owner. They wouldn't let dealers do anything but Remove and replace. It was a bit "hush hush" in my opinion. Many of the M96 engines/cars are now out of warranty/cpo (or about to be) and porsche seems less helpful.
Sadly, these engines were built to a PRICE POINT. The older aircooled cars, the motors were seemingly OVERBUILT for their needs in comparison. Then again, Porsche couldn't afforrd to build cars like they "used to", ie 993 and older, hence the changes that were made.
