Jhbrennan, you are correct. My error. I thought you were saying that the GT3 does not have a range 1 over rev. As we know, it does, and a much higher threshold, as you correctly stated. Thanks. Great table posted above.

The Range 4 and 5 aren't real on this car and are probably just a glitch. 3 ignitions in range 5 is a FRACTION of a second if it actually happened to this car there would be many more in range 4. Not to mention, this range occurred half way through it's current running hours. There's nothing wrong with this car, buy it and drive it. If anything, it looks like it's had a decent life and has actually been driven.
For all intents and purposes, a driven boxer engine is always better than one that's been sitting.

Here's my real question though (I should probably ask in a separate thread). What is redline for the various engines? My 08 turbo has a red tick at 6600 on the tach but an 08 GT2 has the red tick at 6800...and if the GT3 engine can spool up to 9000 why do revs in that range cause such angst for turbo owners? I know both the turbo and GT3 us the same base GT1 engine and I imagine there are internal engine difference too but what enables a GT3 to go to 9000 without valve float (and other) issues but 9000 would be a range 6 over rev in a turbo.

1936 ignitions at 698.3 hours, range 1
395 ignitions at 698.3 hours, range 2
49 ignitions at 698 hours, range 3
5 ignitions at 566.8 hours, range 4
3 ignitions at 415.1 hours, range 5
-- ignitions at -- hours, range 6
962 hours
20,800 miles
Obviously the range 4 & 5 bother me, but the hours look strange too: 20.9 mph average?
Is that 100% city driving or odometer rollback?

good DME read may have 300-500 in section 1, 100-200 in section 2 and 0-50 in section 3. sections 4+ should be all clean.

I've talked to a couple of Porsche mechanics, the dealer, and a Porsche engine builder. None of them were overly concerned although the engine builder suggested compression and leakdown check along with an oil analysis.
By my figuring the engine has spent about 5 seconds at ~7,400, about 1 second at ~7,600, about 16 revolutions at ~7,800, less than 2 revolutions at ~8,000 and less than 1 revolution at ~9,000. This really doesn't seem like too much considering my 930 spends a couple seconds in redline everytime I drive it. Granted it's not a stock engine, but it still has much heavier internals than a 997 engine.
At this point I'm planning to buy if it passes my inspection.

i would LOVE to see a complete DME listing of all failed 997 engines so we could actually verify what % had overrevs and what % didnt. i'm no gambler (read: yes i am) but i'd be willing to bet that for every overrev failed engine, there's one (or more??) failed engine(s) with zero overrevs.
i'm not saying a DME cant be used as a possible indicator of engine wear, or abuse, etc, but i think WAY too much stock is being put into this one parameter simply because it's measurable (as oppposed to "how many times was the car dogged when cold", "how many clutch drops or stoplight-to-stoplight shootouts has it performed", etc).
and the more i think about it, it seems to me even porsche doesn't know for sure...otherwise they'd reject ALL failed overrev engines, wouldnt they? yes, yes, i know it's been said ad nauseum that porsche can reject range 4-6 engines, but i also know for a fact (from somewhere on this site, or 6speed probably...but most definitely from talking to my service advisor who has seen it first hand) that range 4-6 failed engines have been warrantied. so what does that say? to me it says even porsche cant prove the overrevs caused it so they capitulate and warranty it.
whatever, just sayin. attack away.

I passed on the car. There were too many little things for it to be an over $50K car to me. The main thing was the low miles but high hours. It was evident on the interior.

Good decision. You made the right call. Don't be discouraged. Stay patient & smart. The "right" car (for you) is just around the corner. The hunt is just as much (or more than) the actual kill!
