I was out bombing around in the snow storm tuesday night on Pilot A/S and in a 964 C4 and the only problem, was going down some of the steep hills in the all seasons. There are so many hills are cars lining most of the streets, you really don't want to slide into anything. I missed the bite that true winters would have given me there. Outside of that, I'm guessing the 4wd made climbing all those same hills much easier, but the traction bias in a 964 is much different than all the subsequent C4s so in a 997 it might be different. Such as the guy who couldn't clear his driveway. Regardless it was a hell of a lot of fun sliding around in the snow!

I was going to reply as well, until I realized the OP only wanted
the opinions of S owners.

Some day, I will somehow find the means to get into an S. Or wait, a minute,
there isn't enough difference between a Carrera and and S to worry
about it. I guess I'll just go with the GT3.

<sigh> I simply listed S/4S due tot he fact these are both the options I personally am weighing not because I didn't want opinions from those of you without the S. Didn't realize some of you were so sensitive.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input. This was very helpful.

I drive a 996 C2 (not 997) but it may still be relevant to your question. I use my 996 as a DD; tires are the key. I use Nokian WRG2 - all weather tires with rubber compound designed for colder, wet use. No issues in the Seattle snow.
