Default Oil Over Fill on my First Add...Found Solution

I have about 2600 miles and did my routine oil level check...was a bit over "the half way mark." I was a bit surprised and thought I might need to add at least 2 quarts. I filled with one quart, checked again, and low and behold it was at full bar (needs to be one tick below the full bar). So...I had an "overflow" problem that I needed to remedy. Rather than loosen the nut on the oil pan and create a mess, here's what I did.

Removed and drained my filter and used a suction to gather up all the oil in the reservoir...came out to be about 1/4 of a quart. Did my check again and it was perfect.

2 lessons here:
1. don't be hasty to add oil, even when several bars low...start with a quarter quart and go from there.
2. If you over fill, no need to jack it up...just pop the hood, drain the oil from the filter with suction!

Just another advantage of the 997.2... Onward!

lesson 3 - read the owner's manual re adding oil:
>Add at most 0.5 quarts (0.5 liter) of engine oil
at a time.

>If necessary, repeat the process and add more
engine oil as required.

I would also suggest not trying to hit the top - one bar below is good and next time you check may read at the top anyway.

I'm the expert at oil levels (since I go through so much oil). Wait until it is at the bottom--nearly blinking. THEN add one entire quart.

convert, I've done the same thing many times. Curse that electronic failure gauge! Curse it!

BTW you can use the same oil filter trick on the .1 , it's just a little messier.

With such a large crankcase, there should be no reason to top off. Only add when system tells you to then in small increments until at full level. Topping off seems to be the primary reason for overfills...or service techs filling too full. I ask the service guys to add 8 quarts and leave the last bottle for me to adjust - avoids overfills.

Thanks for the feedback! If only some of us read the manual...it's always in there...

I just did an oil and filter change, only used 8 qts and all the bars on the guage are lit, indicating full. Thought the top bar would not be lit. FYI I let the old oil drain for about 1/2 hr.

If you pull the filter housing off of the underside of the engine on a 997.1 model will you dump out 8 quarts onto the floor or is the sump sealed at that point enough that you'll just drop what is in the filter and pump?

For the 997.1

Each segment of the display corresponds to approx.
0.4 liter.

The fundamental lesson that so many owners just don't get for whatever reason is that having the bars not be all the way to the top does NOT mean you are low on oil... it just means you don't have the maximum amount of oil you should ever have in the system, in the system.

The maximum amount of oil it should hold operationally is NOT the target you should be aiming at. ANYWHERE along that fill range is good. Even below is ok for a short time. Thats why the 'oil low' warning message and light doesn't come until after its below the bottom bar and blinking.

Shoot for somewhere in the middle bar or upper 1/3rd and call it a day. Obsessing with getting the maximum quantity of oil in there does nothing for the car other than increases your chance of overfilling, and maybe buys you a few hundred miles before you need to top off the next time. Is it worth it? Not in my book.
