Default Worry about new car sitting?

I have been kicking around the idea of getting an '08 GT2. There are a fair number of low mileage examples and I even found one at a non-P dealer in Los Angeles, presumable an estate sale or the like with delivery miles only. I would imagine many 'new' porsches sit for 6-12 mths without being driven or broken in, but would you worry about one that has sat for 2-3 yrs?

I just bought a leftover, new, untitled 2009 2CS cabriolet that had been on the dealer's lot for two years. Noone apparently liked the color (cream white with cocoa). Before buying it, I spoke with my local porsche service guy. He recommended getting the oil, filter and brake fluid changed. I also had them replace the battery. He said should be no issues with these newer cars sitting for that period of time. Hope this helps.

I think Nokona gives good advice.
There is anecdotal evidence that cars that are not used are more prone to RMS leaks.
Sounds to me like a great way to pick up a 7-GT2!

I agree with the above--change the oil and brake fluid. Batteries are not expensive if you replace yourself--$67 at Walmart. Of course if the dealer throws in a new battery, such much the better. Sitting is more an issue with a car that has an "owner" because you never know if the owner has good habits, like when you do drive, is it driven long enough to get the fluids well up to termperature to burn off moisture in the oil, ect...

As one of the posters said... your biggest issue is going to be the RMS as it requires engine vacuum from use in order to lubricate itself. Probably worth having it at least checked out if you purchase the car.

A 2-3 year old that has sat for the bulk of that time is getting close to where I'd be a bit concerned. Early on for a new car the sitting doesn't have much impact.
But as time goes by the idleness starts to have an increasing impact on the car's condition, at least regarding seals, gaskets, etc.

As others have wisely suggested, budget for (in your offer) all vital fluid services.

Budget for a new battery. Why try to nurse one that has probably run down a few times and may not have much life left even if you drive the car every day?

Tires are considered no good after 6 years so be sure to check tire manufacturing dates. Even if the tires have several years left be sure you get some allowance for the fact you will not get the full 6 years of life out of them.

Depending upon where the car spent its time sitting around doing nothing I'd be very careful to check the car over inside and out for any signs of rodent infestation.

Lastly, one hopes the car still have some warranty left and you can drive the car enough miles for any new car defects problems to manifest themselves and have these taken care of under warranty.

Sincerely,

MarcW.

Get a good PPI, and with the money you save get an extended warranty.
