Default Porsche 911 GT2 RS vs Carrera video - worth the £100k premium?

today on Autocar.co.uk

Porsche's new 612bhp 911 GT2 RS is the most powerful production Porsche the sports car firm has ever produced. But is its £164k price tag worth the £100k premium over the standard - and brilliant - entry-level Carrera model?

Jamie Corstorphine compares the two in a series of head-to-head tests - including acceleration and around the track - to find out.

0 - 150 mph Carrera = 28.7 seconds...
0 -150 mph GT2 RS = 15 seconds! Wow!

It's too bad they did the test under damp conditions. I love the GT2 RS, but for me the video didn't really show that huge a gap over the standard Carrera.

In flat accelaration the gap was huge and obvious. But in the lap race, not so much.

In F1, they call a wet weather race the great equalizer. The point is that wet weather hampers the GT2RS more from showing it's true potential, which is that much higher than the standard Carrera. In the lap race the Carrera wasn't that far behind the GT2RS, as the RS couldn't put all it's power down. To me it looked like the kind of gap I would have expected over a Turbo, not over the base C2. Had the race been dry, the gap would have been much greater.

Track times don't say very much about handling. All the track times tell you about handling is, "The turbo's power is sufficient to pull it around a track in less time than the C2S, despite the added weight." It doesn't say anything about which car is more fun to drive around the track, or on the street, or which car will do better in an endurance race, or any number of other aspects that may cause one to choose a naturally aspirated or RWD car over the Turbo.

"Lower lap times" means "lower lap times." It doesn't mean "better track car" or "better car".

It's the slower driver who cares about the car's (rather than the driver's) lap times.

Wow, texas911. Can you let that go? Why don't you come hang out at the track with me sometime? You're still in Houston, right?

I, too, would like to see GT3 RS vs. GT2 RS. I'd like to get a better understanding of how effectively the GT2 RS can use its power in the dry. I've experienced the GT3 RS (997.1), and its ability to use that 415hp is pretty impressive.

Why would they waste the time against the standard Carrera and not the S?

Makes sense to me -- they're comparing the top (by price) of the range 911 with the bottom of the range 911 to see just how far apart the two ends of the spectrum are from each other.
