Been dealing with this issue with Porsches since the 1970s. German-suppied glass is very hard and thus will chip rather than break. If you can find a US supplier (doubtful) for the 997 (made in the USA) then you may have other issues. Personally, I would only put an OEM windshield back in as there are way too many special things in these windows today, not withstanding antennas, etc.

I live in Colorado so my windshield gets pitted pretty fast. I have used a Chick and A Windshield https://achickandawindshield.com/ for almost two years and have always received excellent service. Better quality chip repair than many of the larger companies. If you are a fan of helping out small business owners, this is the place to go.

I have Clearplex windshield protection film on the 993 and am very happy with it. Didn’t bother with the 997.2 because the windshields are not a nightmare to change like the 993.

Clearplex may be a solution for some after a fresh ws is installed.

For what it’s worth I bought both my cars - a 1997 C2 and a 2011 C4S - when they were five years old, original owners and both with 17,000 miles on them. Both northeast cars no winters. Both windshields were crap and sandblasted. First thing I did was new OEM windshields.
