08 targa 4s - tick tick tick...help.
Hey fellas - I am getting a ticking/knocking noise from a CPO '08 targa 4s with 28,000 miles on it. Dealer said it is most likely the tensioner, so replaced it, said drive 500 miles to 'break it in' and then if tick tick tick still present, they will re-evaluate. Only been a week since I got car back.
Personally, I am not convinced it is the tensioner; the tick tick does increase rate with throttle and gets drowned out. The sales person still believes this sound is 'normal for the S engine.' I have heard other S's but not this tick tick.
Any thoughts? Thank You.

I just had the same tick. Recorded it on my iPhone and let the dealer listen before I drove. Tech said it's likely a stuck lifter. Sometimes they get stuck at top dead center. He told me to drive it for about 10 min at around 4k RPMs to see if it would free itself. If not, then they would look at it under CPO. He was certain it was not IMS related.
So I went home to do that and when I started it again, the noise was gone. It was exactly the same tick as you have.

yeah, I'd take it back... but actually the rate of ticking does seem too slow to be a stuck lifter. usually when you hear a stuck lifter it's more like twice the rate of what you hear here at idle. It actually sounds like it may be belt related- like the seam on the belt was mismanufactured or something.
But yeah, of course it needs attention.

thank you. I 've only had it back for a week and told to drive 500miles
and then come back if not gone. but I think I will take it in earlier, next week.
will give follow up to close loop.

You need to avoid salespeople regarding issues with your car. Speak with the service manager.
That the dealer replaced the tensioner and the noise is still present says the dealership took a shot in the dark at the symptom and missed...
Remind the dealer one of the major reasons you bought the car was because of this dealer's heavily touted service expertise, factory trained, techs, experienced techs, etc.
The quality of the "repair" is about on the level of the corner gas station.
State in your words that due to the noise you have lost all enjoyment of the car because you are seriously concerned the noise portends serious engine trouble looming and you're afraid the car will manifest this at the worst time.
Leave the car at the dealer with the understanding -- in writing on a copy of the work order copy you walk away with and the copy that is in the dealer's hands -- the source of the noise will be id'd by a factory trained tech and corrected to your satisfaction. This does not include driving the car 500 miles to break in a tensioner that was obviously not the source of the noise to begin with.
The noise can arise from several sources. Sans hearing the noise my WAG would be a noisy lifter. Not uncommon. I've encountered a few modern Porsches over the years with this condition. The fix is not a big deal: remove the camshaft cover and replace the noisy lifters. Sometimes just one is replaced but sometimes more than one.
But the dealership service department tech should be the one to make the correct diagnosis.
Sincerely,
Macster.
