problem is - if you have 9" wide front rims you may want 255 or 265 rubber on them but nt01 and ra1 do not exist in those sizes, only in 245. for auto-x 265 instead of 245 in front makes quite a difference.

i got used to 265/335 feel, to run 245 in front it wants 315 in rear, so, it just takes some time to figure out all available options.

245-40-18 fit perfectly on 9's rims. 265 and you really need to go to 10" rims. You want the widest rim possible as this stretches the sidewall a little and helps keep the tread flat in the corner

Thanks Mike. I have a set of CCW 18x9 and 18x12 and plan on going with 245's on the front and 305's or greater on the rears (depends on the brand as to size availability).

btw, Mike, after your recent issues with both RA1 and R888, what tires are you going to use next season?

are the RSS streetable? I mean they have the solid thrust bearing and monoball as well...

I have the ROW 030 suspension and ride on michelin cup sports... I do about 15-20 DE every year and need more -ve camber in front... but I drive my car on the street as well...

torn between a used set of 997 GT3 control arms (with adjustable thrust bushing kit installed) or 996 GT3 with non-adjustable stock rubber bushing

OR

go for the RSS - but I'm worried about the ride quality...

any ideas?

Default Camber and Lower Control Arms

Folks...

I have a 2009 Carrera S to which I've added GT3 LCAs with 2.5 degrees negative camber in the front and 2.0 degrees negative in the rear, purchased from Tarret Engineering along with a 16mm shim for each side. The bolts in this 2-piece control arm are barely long enough to allow for the nut to be screwed on. Is 16mm of shim too much? I am generally happy with the tire wear (RE-11s) and handling both street and track. Any thoughts on shim size and camber settings?

That is odd you have thick shims like that. I have the same arms ont eh same car and have something around a 5mm or so shim and have gone from -2 up to -2.7 which was too much and back down to -2.3 all with the same shim.

For Sebring I have found for me and my tires that right around -2.3 front and zer toe and -1.9 with 2mm (.18ish degrees) per side toe to be enough. I have run up to -2.7 front and -2.3 rear and found that on my R888 tires for the stock Sport PASM suspension that to be almost too much camber. For Daytona that does not require this much camber I run right at -2 front and -1.7 rear.

You might want to make a post about this over on the racing and DE forum on rennlist too....that is were all us track rats hang out. Also welcome to the forum...there are a lot of really knowledgable guys hear..way more knowledgable than I am. Stick around and post some....we needs pics of your car too! Thanks!

Mike...

Thanks for the quick response. The recommendation for the 16mm shim came from Ira at Tarret Engineering based on my desire to get 2.5 degrees of negative camber. You are the second person to indicate surprise with the size of the shim.
If a smaller shim would still allow for 2.5 degrees of negative camber then the issue of bolt length could be avoided as well. More research needed!
...oh and the pictures...sorry about the generic one...tried to upload one of my own pictures and it wouldn't take...will try again soon.

My shim looks like the size of the shim is the picture of the RSS lower control arm pictured in post #35 above. That is nowhere near 16mm. I've had up tp -2.7...I don't run that right now though.

Very interesting thread.

I also have 996 GT3 LCA in my 997.2, maybe someone can enlighten me re:

- There are two "modes" to adjust the arms, Porsches installation instructions say one is for road other for track. what is the difference?
- How can i adjust caster with there arms without changing other components?

Modes to adjust the arms? You adjust camber with shims or top of the shocks or the ecentric bolt.

Caster can be adjusted if you have the arms with the adjustable 2 or 3 hole thrust arm bushing.

in case if one goes with 996 gt3 LCAs instead of 997 gt3 lcas (as 996 is twice cheaper than 997) then it need way more shims. but it is perfectly fine, it works same good.
