I've got a theory about this Cayman R...

Gearing and hp will always be neutered in this car. They will never allow it to take over the 911 in any way and especially on the race track.
The fact is that a 3.6l 320 hp 996 that weights at least 100-200 lbs more at the time could accelerate at the same rate as the specs say for this car. I thought a lighter similar hp car with today's technology would be much quicker. Proof that the gearing has been neutered.

I'd love the see the basic 911 (non-GT3) get an "R" treatment. Just take a C2S (no powerkit needed), strip off the weight, limit the options, tune up the suspension, add that classic Porsche logo-ed stripe on the sides, and keep the price about the same as a base C2S. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Too bad we didn't get it like that.

The Gen 2 Cayman S with PDK and Sport Chrono is almost stupid proof on the track.

Kosmo, that is the Cayman Interseries car. You buy it gutted and prepped from a certain Porsche dealer and enter their series.
I've been saying this for a long time, they should have put the 996 GT3 engine in the Cayman, some fine suspension, LSD, brakes and price it around $85-90k. They should have called it Cayman GT or GT4

why would porsche give performance away for that cheap? Ferrari sells their junk for $400K !!!
the real question is would you pay $150 for the version of the Cayman you describe?

I'm saying a less stronger engine in a Cayman, something around 365hp. This way it makes sense to buy a GT3 over a Cayman GT (or what ever they would call it) if you want more performance.
Think about it: a Cayman GT w/ 365hp (3.6L) VS. GT3 w/ 435hp (3.8L). If you have more cash lying around you can buy the GT3, and if not buy the Cayman GT for about $90k. If there was such a car for that price I would not waste any minute...

Cool looking car - basically a marketing/packaging thing - nice wheels and stripes. If they could cut a hole in the top, I'd like the Cayman, but when I have driven them, they feel too small and enclosed. I know I speak heresy, but I'm a sunroof guy - that or cabrio, so I currently prefer the Boxster Spyder version - re-loaded with all the gadgets.

I just don't get the comment that people would not buy a car that is intentionally held back. What does that mean? The 911 is intentionally held back from being a "911 S". The 911 S is intentionally held back from being a GT3, and that is held back from being a "GT2 RS".
