Steering wheel clicking

When I turn my steering wheel I hear a click, not very loud but somewhat annoying. It just cropped up. It doesn't affect the steering- in other words there is no slop in the steering. I can grab the steering wheel and the steering shaft and they move in concert.
When the car is stopped at a light, I can move the steering wheel back and forth really fast a few MMs and hear the clicking each time i change direction.
I suspect it might be the bearing right behind the dash board or the electrical connection for the switches on the steering wheel.
I'll probably take it in for a check (still under warranty) but I'm wonding if anyone has had a similar issue and how they rectified it.
Thanks

It might just be a piece of dirt/bug/paper or something stuck in there. Take a look if you can where the steering wheel enters the dash.
Here in the mid-atlantic we are over run with Stink bugs. They are getting in everywhere and making a mess.
Just a thought

maybe the locking piston is not backing out all the way. you could try shutting down, and turning the steering wheel until it locks. Then restart and release the piston to see if it backs out all the way.

Yes, it could be this lockout mechanism. Shutting the car down and taking out the key and restarting doesn't make a difference. The noise is consistent and always there.

Yes, I did remove the key and twist the wheel to activate the locking mechanism. after reinserting the key, same issue. It's a consistent problem that's always there. It did just crop up though.

Started maybe 9 months ago. Would come and go. But now it's consistent.
Really hope someone has an idea how to diagnose this problem.

I had this issue on my 987.2 Cayman, which I believe has the same steering system. There is a pinch bolt where the steering shaft attaches to the splined input of the steering rack that was slightly loose.
If you remove the front left wheel you can get a straight shot to this bolt with a 13mm socket and a bunch of extensions. Loosen it slightly and then retorque to spec of 18 ft-lb, see if that helps.
I still had a little click at 18 so I retorqued to 20 ft-lb and it's been fine since.
