Default Tracking in dry... which tire is better 3/32, 5/32?

I got two sets of rear PS2 tires. One's got 3/32 on the inside, 4-5/32 on the outside, the other is like 5/32 on the inside, and 6-7/32 on the outside...

I was planning to get the most out of the older tire, and then before putting winters on, get rid of em, and put the newer tire back on the 19s (for next season).

Now, I am planning to do one more track day this week and not sure if the lower tread tire poses any issues at such low tread depth, but it's gonna be a dry day (I know for sure it's not gonna be good in the rain).

Thanks

Typically, when purposely shaved for competition use, tires are taken down to 4/32" tread depth. You should have no issues with tread depth, at least, on a dry track with your more-worn PS2's.

So, would it even be better than the newer one? I was never 100% sure if worn tires are better for dry or not?!

Worn tires are no good in the wet so use them when you know it'll be dry.

Not to repeat something you probably already know, but tires are shaved to help eliminate tread block squirm and subsequent chunking that can occur with fully treaded tires when abused on the track. My point about shaving is that 4/32" is the starting point for shaved tires and they are obviously expected to continue to perform as the tire wears down even more.

So all else being equal, the 4/32" tire should be "better" than the newer ones from the standpoint of squirm. They will certainly work fine for a track day, and it makes more sense to me to use the older set and "waste" them rather than the newer set that is still road worthy.

Ok, thanks Mike, that's what I thought... so unless they COMPLETELY screw up the forecast, I'd be going with the older tires!

Yes. In the dry you want soft slicks. But not if it rains.

If it never rained we all would be driving around on slicks....more rubber on the ground.

The reason a lot of us shave track tires down to 4 or 5/32 is so that the tread blocks move around a lot less and that after a few heat cycles we have almost a slick tire and the tire is not heat cycled out.

For street tires...PS2 in your case.... your rubber is a lot harder than R-Comp tires a lot of us use for DE's and racing. It will not really matter and your worn PS2's will be fine for a DE
