Default Cleaning Discolored Exhaust Tips?

I am a new member and had a question about cleaning exhaust tips. I purchased a 2006 C2S CPO'd and the tips were nearly black. I have tried to clean them with chrome polish and they look like they're stainless. Here is a before picture? Is this a lost cause? I saw some Evolution Motorsports chrome tips that looked nice and maybe I should just replace them?

Also, do people remove them to clean them and is it just loosening that one bolt to remove them? Any trick to removing, or putting them back on?

Thanks for the help!

Jon

Maybe give them a once over with some Never-dull.

I ran out of things to clean on the car and discovered the tips this weekend. What joy! Based on your post, I'm not quite sure if you actually attempted to clean them. I used a wadding polish called "Never Dull" by Eagle One. You can find it at home depot. I also used a scrubbing pad to help with the hard areas. It took me about 30 minutes and I'm quite happy with the results. I did not remove the tips. I would not replace the stock tips every time they got a bit dirty, perhaps the car.

Cheers

Thanks, was it easy to get the tips off? Just loosen the bolt and do they pull right off? Easy to align back?

Thanks, I'll try the Never Dull.

fwiw, I use this product on my exhaust tips. It also tends to keep the carbon and soot off (just do a quick wipe with a dry cloth once in a while after application.)

Most of the Euro auto factories use it.

You can get it here, and at other detailing shops: http://www.autogeek.net/menzerna-polishing-cream.html

Those look like standard tips. Try some 0000 steel wool with whatever metal polish you choose, then go over them again with the polish on a rag and buff.

Do you all take them off to clean them, to avoid getting compound on painted surfaces?

Thanks!

I clean with Sonax wheel cleaner then use Wenol or similar mild polish.

Another suggestion....have your existing tips ceramic coated mat black as I did on my meteor grey pcar. Looks outstanding and it's not expensive, about $50 for the pair.

5 minutes of work with very fine steel wool followed by Mothers stainless polish will be good as new. The black matte solutions are much harder to maintain.

Do you all take them off to clean them, and are there any tricks to getting them off, or getting them back on and aligned? Thanks!
