Bad clutch in only 30K miles - possible?

So I read this post yesterday and my today on the way home from work my cluch gives out. 2006 Carrera S 31k miles. It wasn't a slow degradation, something definately 'broke'. The pedal was nice and firm, then went to the floor and didn't come back by itself. Pressure plate failure? I could still shift but the clutch pedal was as light as a feather and there was vibration when I released it. Get on the gass too hard and the engine would rev a bit more than it should.

My 997T had the clutch replaced right after break-in. It worked fine but had a chatter at low rpm's, not all the time and it was minor but still bugged me. I could easily duplicate it and the dealer agreed it was a problem but it took the regional guy and a few days and a few calls to get it replaced since it's considered a wear item. It was only off a few 1/1000 but enough. It's a precision device; if it's off a bit, it wears out quicker, if it's perfect- can last a real long time. And of course, there are those that don't know how to drive a stick, so...

If somebody is dumping the clutch, abusing the car, banging off the rev limiter all the time, missing shifts and causing range 6 over-revs, it might explain driving habits and why a clutch needs to be replaced at only 30k miles. If you are investigating why, then this is one area where you can easily explore - just look at the DME readout. Of course the car may have been babied and it's a mechanical defect.

Dealer suggests it's probably the pressure plate or linkage in which case it'll be a covered repair. I'm no expert but don't think the linkage alone would cause slipping.
On a side note on my way to the dealership a guy pulls out into busy traffic in a brand spankin new Turbo S like he stole the car...

bought my car from the second owner (who owned it for 6 months) and he bought it CPO'd from the dealer.
RMS was leaking so the dealer replaced it. I had them throw in a new clutch kit that I picked up from sunset and the only cost to me was the kit.
The car had 35k on it when I did this. The reason I wanted to put a new kit in was the the clutch was really stiff, stiffer than I thought it should be.
With the new clutch kit, it's smooth as butter with much less pressure required.
Orginal clutch was fine, pressure plate was rough looking.

When I did my 05 997 clutch this winter at 30k miles (due to slippage) there was lots of meat left on the disc which told me the spring in the pressure plate had weakened.
Can abuse damage the pressure plate? I have a hard time understanding how the pressure plate could be affected. It looked normal.
