Default MINI challenges Porsche to a race

Brilliant marketing. Mini has nothing to loose...even if they loose it's great fun.

I wonder if this will set a precedence that other manufacturers will engage for future challenges?

Perhaps they should tighten up some of the fasteners.

Love MINIs and Porsches, so it'd be a fun race either way!

I'll put my 32 year old 180 hp rear engined air cooled relic up against it.

I love the idea. That video is totally hilarious with all the t-shirt swaps and goofy photoshops. Either way, it's great press for both brands...and it's fun! That's what it should all be about...like a pro-wrestling feud, win or lose...no body really gets hurt.

I own a 06 Cooper S and an 06 Carrera S, so I'll just sit back and watch the entertainment. Love both cars. Wouldn't give either up. Kind of a no-brainer on the race without cheating, but the MINI is a great track car, just not as fast as the Porsche.

Great publicity stunt. I think the Mini guy plays the skin flute!

Their proposed race has people on internet forums talking about MINIs and comparing MINIs to Porsches. So even though they will lose the race, they have already succeeded.

At my second track event ever last year in my 2008 997S Cab, on the 3.5 mile Thunderhill track, I "raced" against a Mini S. The guy driving the Mini was a seasoned veteran track guy and I was a relative noob. As a rookie, I could catch him in the straights but not enough to pass and then he actually beat me in the curves (we were not allowed to pass in curves but I couldn't have got by him anyway).

Clearly the outcome would have been different if both drivers were of equal skill but I must admit, I was pushing hard and was absolutely frustrated (and a bit embarassed) for many laps.

Will never forget it - this potential race hits home for me.

Porsche turned down the Road Atlanta challenge, telling Mini, well, this:

Mini found someone with a 911 to race against them as a proxy anyhow. Despite copping out and ditching the full Road Atlanta course for an infield autocross course designed specifically to favor the Mini, the Mini still lost to the Porsche by 2 seconds. They all seemed to have enjoyed themselves, though!

The Porsche driver is a Rennlister (check the Racing forum) and AFAIK has better credentials than the MINI driver, who owns a MINI dealership, I believe.
