gas mileage, revisited....

Hmmm. This is interesting to read. I've been contemplating selling my 1996 993 C4S, my 2002 E46 BMW, and my 2009 E63 AMG, and getting a new 997.2 to have only one car now as a decent, fun to drive daily.
Part of that reasoning was the idea that the 997 had pretty decent gas mileage for the sort of car it is. But my 507 hp heavy weight AMG sedan gets the same kind of mileage that you guys are posting here.
Aggressive to the point of tire smoke=10-12
Normal city driving=14-17 (even 19 in C mode and with a light right foot)
Highway at 75-80 mph=23-24
So I guess I should cross off fuel economy as a factor in my decision making
Yeah, of course I realize the choice isn't all about gas mileage, but I like the E63 as a daily and part of my rationale is not only to stay with Porsche but conserve a bit of fuel use, too.

Low 20s commuting a mix of interstate and city streets.
just did a trip 350 miles each way A/C on most of the way speeds 70-78 with some construction delays, averaged over 27 MPG
track < 8 MPG
pure city (rare) 18-19 MPG.
As you can see, I save most of my more aggressive driving for the track and it shows in the fuel economy.

Just relocated my car to SW about a 1500 mile trip and I got about 27-29 mph overall on basically 2 lane divided hwy driving. In the city I usually get about 17-18mph mixed maybe 20mpg. If I am on it in sport mode or sport plus about 15mpg. PDK car. So far very satisfied with it. Check out the snapshot.

But I know it really shouldn't enter into the decision. It's just that I do like the E63 as a daily and love that torque. But since I have to get life down to one car and dump the 993, I'm not sure I could live properly without a P-car.

I was searching around and there have been several threads on this, most recently early this year...
I thought I'd bring it up again because I've been getting 13.7 mpg in mixed use driving and 9-11 mpg in regular local street driving... and I am NOT flooring it and driving crazy.... On the streets I generally shift at ~4,000 RPMs...
If I drive on the freeway at 65 mph in 6th gear, I can get 23mpg, but other than that, the mileage drops dramatically...
Is something wrong? At first I thought my gas gauge was malfunctioning but then realized the fuel level really was dropping that fast. It's not that I'm overly concerned, but I was reading other threads and it seems that most people are getting much better gas mileage than I am...

I noticed once engine warmed up I was shifting from 1st to 2nd at around 3500 rpms. Then shifting into successively higher gears at under 3K and cruising at 2K. Which gear I had the transmission in depended upon the speed limit in force on the road where I was driving. I used 3rd for 25mph zones, 3rd or 4th for 35mph and 5th for a 45mph zone.
Oh, a bit of a side track: I remember when I had my 06 GTO with its instantaneous fuel mileage display that driving at a steady speed on flat ground depending upon which gear I had the transmission in and thus at what RPM the engine was turning had a big effect on fuel consumption.
I can't remember the exact numbers now but roughly from best case -- say 5th or 6th gear at around 1600 or a bit higher rpms to worst case of 3rd gear or even 2nd gear at I don't know what rpms -- would have the instantaneous fuel consumption reading going from a nice 30+mpg down to half that. Also, I remember under moderate acceleration from stop starting out of course in 1st gear and then shifting up the gears until the speed limit required I throttle back could have the instantaneous fuel consumptiion reading in the single digits (6mpg or even a bit less!) for a while.
Anyhow, fuel mileage under the conditions I described above for my 996 (0E) Turbo was 16.1mpg.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I've got an '08 C4S. I get comparable mileage to what you describe. I shift at about the same point on the streets as well.
Highway on cruise I've been able to get 28 mpg (once). The rest of the time it's 23-26 mpg on highway with cruise.
I wouldn't worry about your car in the context of something being wrong. I don't think anything is wrong with your car.
