Option # 3 but just take time researching 993's, 997's (see what the must have options are) and buy with due dilligence and get the car with the right options in the color that you want. There are plenty of nice cars available.

My only advice is to enjoy the process of buying!
Test drive all sorts of options - Ferrari 355's, 70's corvettes and finally (and most importantly), Porsche cabs, targas and turbos from classic to modern.
Enjoy!
P.S. I vote for #2 - The 996 dropped in value because it looked like hairy *** crack.
When it came out, I wrote to Porsche to say "Dear Sirs: I've wanted a 911 since I was 7. No longer."

buy the best car you can afford and dont worry about the value...unless ur planning on selling quickly? otherwise, enjoy the car and its a sports car, its a toy (to me it is) i wouldnt worry about trying to keep its value, i always think of it as a loss everytime i buy a car, hmmm maybe thats why i own or have owned so many haha

Its still a good time to be buying a 911. Just do it...
Some of us capitalized on the depressed U.S. market late last year and I still believe there are great deals out there. Heck...even some Porsche dealers have new 2008/2009's on the lot!

So my options:
1, wait for the 998 to be released and impact the prices of 997s so I get a 997 cheaper (slower depreciating).
2, don't worry about it, the price drop was purely due to the fried egg headlights.
3, just buy it anyway, the time I'll spend enjoying the car while I could have been waiting for the 998 release is well worth 10%.
What say you?

As a youth I had picture of a 959 and Contach on my wall. I've been talking about getting a 911 for the last 4 years (now I have the money) and based on my enthusiasm one of my buddies went out and bought one earlier this year!
Thanks for the advice. I know what I should do - stop talking about it and just get on with it. I have enough capital in houses and investments that I can die tomorrow and my family will be looked after. Time for me to enjoy my hard work...

Contrary to what some are saying, you can enjoy one of these cars and not take a financial beating.
I purchased a 06 C2S mid last year. The car had warranty until the end of this month, so no exposure as far as major repair expense is concerned, and I bought the car right.
Sold it earlier this month for $1500 less than I paid for it, and drove it 11 months. $136/month....
I put another $500 or so in maintenance, and of course tag and insurance aren't in that #, but I think I did great.
If you go in thinking you're going to lose your ***, you probably will. Be shrewd and take your time to find the right car at the right price.

Clearly you have a need to be analytical but what you're missing is the emotional equation of the/a line. (There's no way you can justify, solely on financial grounds, paying so much for a car.) If you could plot your emotional quotient, taking into consideration price, satisfaction, fun , etc. - whatever factors go into the emotional aspect of your decision, then wherever the lines intersect will be the logical choice. That said, just buy one and be done with it - unless the act of obsessing this way is satisfying (which is also fine).
