OP: I believe the width on the website is measured to the outside of the mirrors, which is the widest part of the car -- not the hips. Right?

I'm not a fan of the 4WD cars, especially on track. It's hardly a controversial opinion. Drive them both and make your own decision, it's a personal choice. Extra weight, extra complexity, loss of steering feel, and the different handling characteristics don't appeal to me. I find the cosmetic difference to be virtually unnoticeable. I'm much happier with the lighter RWD cars.

First off, it's AWD and NOT 4WD! Again, did you drive a Porsche AWD on track? I guess R8 and GT-R also are terrible track cars?

C4S in many cases is faster on some tracks (wet?), and you can put the power down better and get out of corners faster. I certainly don't feel any loss of steering feel compared to C2S I've tested.

C2S definitely lighther, less complex. but has worse weight distribution, and needs a better driver to get the best out of it than the AWD one.
I agree though, different handling characteristics, and totally personal to choose one over the other.

This video sums it up perfectly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaUFy5c9JMM

Oh for pete's sake, where did I call any car a "terrible" car? There's no reason for you to be so offended or defensive.

I prefer the 2WD cars. That's all. Doesn't mean you have to. I'd note that the Stig, Hammond and May agree with me too, so again, mine is hardly a unique or controversial preference.

Alex76, I think you summed it up by writing " ...needs a better driver to get the best out of it than the AWD one. "

2wd for me.

Maybe I was generalizing... but most of the people who say this, have NEVER tried a proper AWD sports car, specially around a track. You'd be surprised how well the new AWD systems work.

GT-R incredble performance is mostly due to the AWD system, and as Stig tested, C4 is faster on particular tracks. Preference is another story... there are people who prefers Mustangs to Porsches!

and yet, STIG did a faster lap on C4! If I was in Dallas, I'd probably stick to 2WD too.

Which new AWD system? The 997.2 AWD yes, but the 997.1 viscous-coupler-based AWD is at least 15 years old.

The tested car by Stig was 997.1 C4!

2wd will be slower for most people around most tracks. However they'll have more fun while going slow and they'll think they're going fast because of their "gnarly" powerslides. Very few people can actually make proper use of a C2, which involves very subtle smooth modulation to control the weight transfer to tame that light front end.

Now for autocross, I would definitely go 2wd.

An electronic 4wd with manual control to let me turn it on and off would be ideal IMO. I'd like to turn it off for cross/gymkhana but turn it off for the track/road.

Please explain to me what the difference is between a "4WD" and an "AWD" car.

4WD can be switched in and out of 4WD as needed. AWD is full-time.

And the answer is this: 100% of people with AWD will tell you it's the better choice. And 100% of people with 2WD will tell you it's the better choice. Ultimately, it's up to you to choose.

I actually ended up with a C4S (instead of a C2S) because I ended up seeing a car I liked. And I have NO problem getting it sideways.
