Default Spring is here.... How can we help?

Hey there everyone,

While I realize that the weather varies from state to state, it feels like spring here.

I just wanted to remind everyone that GBox is, as you might imagine, a gearbox specialist. With spring here, and more of our P-cars coming out of the garage soon, it may be time to consider a checkup on your gearbox.

If you are having issues with poor shifting, or a whining sound coming from your gearbox, it is always better to get it taken care of before it gets worse than to wait until it breaks.

If we can be of any assistance, be it with parts, or a complete rebuild please do not hesitate to contact us here. We are always here to help.

Warmest Regards, and thank God it is getting nice outside again.

Thanks for posting.
I have a couple of questions:
Where is the drain plug for the manual transmission on the 997.1? Can you provide a pic that shows the drain/fill plug.
The owners manual makes no mention of the frequency of transmission fluid flush as part of routine maintenance. Im not sure i buy in to the "lifetime fluids" that some manufactures have in place. What is the interval that most are following and the recommend fluid?

Whoah I never actually visited the GBox page before. The tech tips are very cool !!

I'm starting to get a bit of whine from my tranny. Is there anything to do besides wait for something to get worse?

CBzzoom,

The whine that you are getting from your gearbox is in all probability a bearing that is beginning to fail. As materials circulate through your gearbox, some of them can get caught up in the bearing surfaces and begin to eat away at the races, this then causes a whine to develop. This is the best case scenario, the worst case is that there could be an issue with your ring and pinion, which if ignored could case some very bad things to happen inside your gearbox.

My recommendation would be to have your gearbox fixed before it fails, as the cost could potentially increase if you wait. I would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail. Feel free to contact me so that we can talk about your options.

Happy to help,

Sharmat,

I will take a quick picture here to show you where you can find your drain plug. As to intervals between changes, I would say that if you are putting some track miles, as well as street driving on it year round, it would be a good idea of change your gear oil at least once a year. If you do a lot of racing on the car, I would recommend that you get an external oil cooler and pump installed, as heat is the biggest killer of gearboxes. I would also recommend considering changing the oil on a more frequent basis, say twice a year, to help keep particulates from causing any damage.

I will post that pic up here in just a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the questions, and please do not hesitate to continue asking them, I am here to help.

Warmest Regards,

Erik Johnson

Alexb76- Another oil question?????? LOL

Well there are several really good oils out there, so don't take this suggestion as the only or even the best option out there, but I have always recommended the Swepco 210 for cars that are doing several DE or track events every year. This has shown to work quite well in all of the gearboxes in Porsche Cars.

Again, there are several option other than Swepco out there, but this is my recommendation.

Thanks for the question, and I am just about to get that picture posted.

Default Here is that pic.

So here is a picture of the nose of the 997 street car gearbox, Where the hole is on the right, center of the casing is your drain plug. The fill area is in the same casing, on the passenger side of the car toward the mounting donut. Let me know if you need a pic of this as well.

Hope that this helps,

Thanks Erik! Ofcourse Oil question, what did you think?

Would that oil work as well on the street (cold), as on track? Any recommendation for Motul products? Not sure if I can source Swepco here, but I guess obviously can order it from you guys.

Last time I was in the dealer I asked about tranny oil; the tech told me anything but OEM fluid will void your warranty. Not sure if he was blowing smoke or not.

For colder climates and street operation, I like the Swepco 201. You should check your warranty though you may not have an option.

In terms of a ring and pinion change, we can certainly help you with this, but I am not sure that you would want to know the price. We would have to have these custom made for us, which is not an issue, but pricing due to the size and style could exceed $4K. Ouch.... Still if this is something that you would like to pursue let me know and I will try to get you more details.
