If it's your first time? The essentials are a helmet which meets spec and a neck brace. A long sleeve cotton t shirt or sweatshirt and jacket depending on weather. Gloves are optional but recommended. Sneakers or other (preferably cotton canvas) shoes that are comfortable without long laces. A tarp to cover all your stuff unless you have a covered paddock. A good quality torque wrench. A good quality air pressure gauge. An extra can of oil and brake fluid. Paper towels and glass plus for your windshield. A full tank of gas, plenty of water for you and a notebook and pen (use the latter!). A big plastic bin to put it all in.
Have your car tech'd beforehand by someone you know and trust and that's about it for the essentials I think. Prepare to have a great time and learn a lot!

See links below for list:
http://www.schattenbaum.org/DriverEd...tenbaumDE.aspx
http://www.delvalbmwcca.org/documents/newstudent.pdf
My basic list:
- Tire pressure gauge
- Your car’s tool kit and some other basic hand tools (screwdriver, small hammer, etc.)
- Jack
- Torque wrench
- Helmet + collar + gloves
- Driving shoes
- A few quarts of oil, coolant, brake fluid
- Extra brake pads (maybe old ones, just to be able to drive home)
- Compressor / Air
- Extra brake lights
- Starter
- Umbrella + rain coat (if needed)
- Cap
- A roll of paper towels and window cleaner
- Extra sunglasses
- Sweatshirt, jacket
- Racer's tape to cover headlights and lenses
- Duct tape (always useful)
- Long sleeve cotton shirt + Cotton pants
- Towel
- Water, coke or a cafeine source
- Snacks
- Swiss knife
- A tarp, at least 4'x6', to cover all this stuff in case of rain
- Portable chair
- Fire proof blanket
- Fire extingusher
- Canopee (may be too much but pretty good in the sun)
- Appropriate reading materials (Panorama, etc.)
- Mosquito spray
- Aspirin, band aid, etc.
- Best to organize all this in waterproof boxes. I went back and forthe between a large one and a few smaller ones. Small is better to fit in a 911 - even better to have one of them with a small lock to keep personal stuff and electronics
- If needed extra gas in a jerry can but I doubt you will need that
And above all, a good attitude. (+Remember to give passing signals...)
Just started packing yesterday for this week-end. Too much stuff.

IMO for a newbie the tools and such aren't that crucial because you can always bum off someone else.
If rain is a possibility a change of shoes and socks would be valuable.
Towel, paper towels, snacks, water, reading material are all very good advice.
Portable air compressor to adjust tire pressure is pretty handy.

Well, I see long lists below and they do make some sense, BUT:
think about yourself first - means helmet, dress in layers, hat/sunscreen, have enough water to drink, clothes to change depending if it rains or not. if it rains - get second pair of boots!
As of car - do not try to take all garage with you, first of all it will not fit. People who like those long lists most likely travel their cars in trailers, so, when it will be your firs time - don`t be shy, introduce yourself to senior folks - you will see those cup cars in trailers, etc., so, speak to people. Those people have all the tools with them you may ever possibly need.
i would not ask to borrow their nitrogen tanks though, but, it depends of how friendly you are.
Still do not forget bare essentials - painter tape to protect your car front and fenders (if you care about paint at all), chemicals to clean your car (goo-off or windex) , paper towel, air gauge and pump and whatever else that will fit into that plastic box container you put into your front trunk.
Overall, keep stress level at minimum and do not try to overdo yourself, all that is supposed to be mostly fun.
