Question DIY Help needed (panel below steering column)

First i would like to start by saying, if I had to choose to buy a Porsche or not based on the Service Department... i would never have a Porsche!.. dropped car off for an entire week in January to fix a rattle, a rattle that i hear every day of my life but over the course of a week they "could not get it to repeat itself"... made an appt last week to have said rattle fixed where i was told to come in early so would have time to get in/out today (those that know me know i have an odd schedule due to a relationship where my GF works night shift @ hospital so i dont enjoy getting up before 2pm) i arrived at 10AM this morning (hour drive to dealer), we drove and the rattle was ever clear and present and then i get back to the dealer and the response is "OK, when do you want to set up an appt to come back and get it fixed?" so in essence, i made an appt to drive 2 hours total to only make another appt.

Funstuff,

either way, i have a loud rattle behind the panel that is below the steering column, they say it sounds like the bar going across is/was not torqued under load... etc etc.. basically i feel i can fix it BUT that panel is about as friendly as my Ex... the screws on the bottom seem to do nothing, and i do not see any other points where it is fixed so I'm guessing their are hidden clips behind/all around.. and if anyone has removed said panel i would appreciate any and all help.

What helps a lot would be to have your G/F drive and you feel around under the dash and hold onto things as you have her drive it around. (Find the worst roads, and put the suspension on firm).

its almost impossible for me to even feel arouns there much less feel there while someone else driving, went to porsche and they didnt even want to take it apart and had to set an appt since they said that panel is very laborious..

i made ***** of tape and put it on everything i thought was moving and noise still there, after the service advisors statement of what it might be, that seems like it has to be it to me..

he said the bar going across the bolts were not tightened under preload, so therefore creak a little bit, they said they would remove the bar, fill with foam and retighten under preload...

funny thing is i always thought they made more in service department than the sales department... so would merit better service in that end.. i would go there for all my service if they were nicer but instead ill go to vortex for everything except the warranty/FREE stuff..

i could go on all day about rants about car dealers.... i just hate them, the only time ive ever had a positive experience buying a car was with my 997.1 (orlando dealer) and my 997.2 (ohio dealer) but i think that is because both were pre negotiated before even seeing the car/getting to the dealership and both were cash sales...

we were at bert smith last week buying a 328i for my GF, and i swear as soon as financing gets involved in the situation the whole process takes like 6 hours... and the bull**** flies left and right and left again...

i wish someone could revamp the whole way people buy cars, instead of putting high prices preying on the weak and uneducated... just put fair market value prices on everything and have slight wiggle room for educated buyers and just make less per car but allow people to actually enjoy buying cars versus making it a game.

Riley - please post your update after your service appt. I would like to know exactly what they did to fix that. Thanks R.

Is this something rattling when driving on smooth surfaces or only broken pavement/expansion joints? If the latter, to go after anything buzzing, such as cables, is a frivolous exercise. All cars I know of, including solid sedan vaults do buzz/rattle over broken pavement.

The streets in my subdivision are brick pavers and with the stiff suspension in our pcars, I can hear more rattles and creaks than I want to hear. All quiet on smooth surfaces/streets.

yes, rattles are quite annoying. i have one around the glove box that the dealer was unable to replicate. it rattled on delivery, but i was too wrapped up in driving it home (driving fun car vs. waiting to fix a rattle....fun car wins).

i'm hesitant to have them root around trying to fix/find it. they may make things worse.
