Interestingly, there *was* a roof rack system for the 996 Targa. My former g/f has a Porsche bike rack on the roof of her '04 996 Targa. But when they came out with the 997 they redesigned the roof ever so slightly - and the mounting point where the 996 rack attached were gone. She'd have bought a new 997 Targa by now, but is keeping her car because she won't give up the roof racks.

The cargo does not do the car justice.

If you watch out for low bridges you can probably fit your board in there

Did you paint it yourself? What did you do to prep the surface for paint?
gave em to a bodyshop to spray, just the crossbars and the tray broken down. they used an etching primer first then sprayed it, at least that's what I told them to do. It's holding up well. I couldnt stand it in the bright aluminum finish. It matched the interior, yes, but it looked horribly out of place from the outside so it had to get paintmatched!

Can you get roof racks for 996 (or 997 for that matter) hardtops? or do they not have mounting points?

No. Hardtops for cabs don't have mounting points and aren't designed to take the weight that a coupe would.
