Default new TPMS sensors

sorry in advance but i searched and found conflicting advice. i am getting a new set of street wheels with new TPMS sensors (old stock wheels with old sensors will be my track set). my dealer says i need to have the sensors "programmed to my vehicle" for $145. ??? is this BS?? arent they just "plug and play"?? (after running the set up, of course, via the on board computer etc) or do i really need to take them in to dealer??

thanks for any info.

This is BS from your dealer. When I bought my winter tire/wheel setup from Tirerack, I reset the TPMS by following the instruction in the owner manual. You have to drive the car for few minutes before the car registering the pressure.

Do you have sports chrono? The cars without may not have the TPMS setting, but I am not sure. On my car definitely it has it (with Sport Chrono).

The TPMS sensors do need to be 'learned' by the car, but that happens by the TPMS system. There is no need to go to a dealer for programming... seems fishy to me (or the Porsche design is even stupider than not having the owners be able to reset their own service reminder )

Sounds like another case of an ignorant dealer. It amazes me how much more many of us know about these cars than the people who sell and service them.

I swapped wheels with TPMS sensors a few times on my last car. It sometimes took a few trips for the TPMS system to recognize and display the sensors each time, but it always did eventually. Also, whenever I'd put 1 or 2 spare rims with TPMS sensors inside the car to go to the tire shop, the system would give up because it could see too many sensors. Again, once the additional wheels were removed, it would settle down again after a while.

my 997.2 learns itself,

i didnt have tpms on my 997.1 but im guessing it would do the same,

i just go to the lil menu in dash and go to tpm and set them up and at the end u drive a little bit and its good to go.

There is absolutely no excuse for the this dealership's TPMS "solution." Whether it's ignorance or BS - run, don't walk, to another dealer (or reputable indy).

All TPMS senders complete their own "hand shake" with the system over time on their own. (997.1 and 997.2)

Yeah, I get this whenever I cart my track wheels around in the back of the car.

thanks all! yep, looks like theyre "plug 'n' play", as i had the wheels put on today and w/in 10 mins they were reading fine. not sure if my dealer svc rep was malicious or ignorant (and/or rec'd misinfo from someone else in shop) but i've had good experience thus far with that partic dealer, so i'm hoping this was just a minor hiccup.

on a related note, i could see this being result of a miscomm in regards to "calibration" vs. "recognizing the new sensors". i've seen in other forums the notion of needing to calibrate new sensors to give an accurate reading, but beyond that, the guy at the tire shop had a tool to do it and actually had to today - he said 2 sensors were off a couple lbs at first so he calibrated. (and no, he didnt charge me extra so i tend to believe he wasnt BS'ing me etc)

thanks again.

there was a change in the tmps between 2007/2008 I THINK or I heard or something. they're not all the same was what i was told. i have 3 sets of wheels with tpms on all of them and the computer recognized them all without any "programming"

if they're compatible i am not aware of anything you can do to make them. looks like your service writer is getting comped on revenue

Check out the last 2 issues of Excellence. They did a 2 part article on all TPMS. I do not believe on a 06 there is an dealer reprogram needed. Boy does this website save people money or what?

Sure, I save $150 by avoiding unnecessary dealer labor.

But thanks to you guys I now consider it totally reasonable to sell my perfectly good C2S Cab and replace it with a GT3 RS.

I can do that math.
